Autumn Brown Trout Fishing

Fishing in streams and rivers for Brown’s is one of my favorite pastimes. The beautiful scenery, the flowing water and the rising fish, it’s hard to beat. Yes, it’s that time again when the brown trout come up from the deep and feed top-side and spawn.  Fall is prime time for targeting brown trout.  Brown trout spawn late in the fall, so during this time they become more mobile and the usually finicky mature males abandon some of their normal cautiousness.

I never bother the brown trout spawning grounds, and neither should you.  This is for our future brown trout fishing, so a successful spawn is important.  Any brown trout in the middle of the lake is fair game.  There fun to catch and I always release them to fight another battle (unless they bleed).

This year I’m aiming for the high elevation browns, above 10,000 feet.  Many people don’t realize that brown trout even live that high, but they do but are kind of rare.  They are smaller than most of the lower elevation browns, but still to can reach over 20” and more in some waters.  I’m aiming for mid-October, any later in the year and the lakes can freeze over.  I have a list of over a dozen + high elevation lakes that I know have the allusive brown trout with 8 days/7 nights to complete this challenge.  If I have any luck and get some decent pictures, I’ll post my adventure!  Wish me luck!

Perfect timing for this thread, wshawkins.  That brown certainly looks healthy!  Live to swim another day.  Nice!

That brown was caught out of Rush Creek in the June Lake Loop.  Saudust, you should be heading that way soon I beleave!  Good luck on your trip.  Stopped by the Resort and jealously looked at your large Rainbow hanging on the wall.  Beautiful fish and nice of you to give the credit to your daughter (I'm sure you had a big hand in this) :D

Beautiful fish! I've seen pictures of a guy who fishes Rush creek every fall and has caught Browns in the 18-20 lb range for the past couple of years! I find that amazing.
Good luck on your trip!

I understand that the Wardens plus the fly fishing groups are keeping an closer eye on the spawning beds due to some fishermen trying to snag them, which is illegal. Saw it myself last fall and chased them out of Rush Creek.

wshawkins, I hardly recognized you without your fingerless gloves on. (the huge brown should have been proof enough.)
Hiking by Rush creek in early August, I never would have believed it could hold such big beauties.
Good luck and be sure to charge your camera batteries.

Just showing a friend an proper catch & release.  Bring in the big brown as quick as possible, use a rubber net to secure it, wet hands and take picture quickly.  Let the poor trout go, resuscitate trout if necessary.

Check out my fingers, that was some cold water!   They hurt now just looking at that photo. ;D

Autumn Brown Trout Fishing

Just recently back from a week (8 days/7 nights) in the beautiful Eastern Sierra looking for the elusive Brown trout in the higher elevation lakes, rivers and streams.  Weather was near perfect, if not a little warm for this time in the season.  Did have some rain one day and it snowed once overnight (about 4” above 10,000 ft.), buts that’s typical weather for these parts.

Add the fall colors and what a great time to visit the Eastern Sierra!  Fall colors were spectacular again this autumn and were in prime form during my short stay looking beautiful from Bishop all the way north to Conway Summit and everywhere in between.  I spend one whole day chasing the fall colors, including Rock Creek which looked especially great at Rock Creek Lake down to about East Fork Campground.

I was a successful trip as I caught at least one Brown (sometimes more) on every water that I targeted.  This trip was similar from lasts years “October Caddis Hatch” (http://www.rockcreeklake.com/board/index.php?topic=893.0) except last year I kept mostly to drive-to lakes where this year’s trip was all about the high backcountry Browns.  Give a couple of days to download the photos and let’s see where I chose to fish and how well I really did!

Autumn Brown Trout Fishing

To catch a wild German Brown Trout in the backcountry, you will most likely need to catch many Brooks and/or Rainbows first as Brown Trout are rarely the only species in the water your fishing.  That’s just a fact!  They can be hard little devils to catch sometimes.  Except for an occasional Brown Trout that I can sight fish; you will need to catch dozens of other fish species before that elusive Brown Trout bites your chosen bait.  But there are ways to cut the odds so to speak and I’ll share some pointers I learned over the years.

So begins my journey searching for the elusive German Brown Trout.

Autumn Brown Trout Fishing

I started my German Brown Trout quest in Yosemite, for good reason as Yosemite has some of the best Brown Trout waters anywhere and I’ll cover 5 excellent spots in Yosemite I visited for this trip report.  All these waters are in or near the Tioga Pass area.

Day 1:  Tuolumne River, Yosemite

Tuolumne River
(http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy115/wshawkins/Trip%20Reports/Autumn%20Brown%20Trout%20Fishing/Tuolumne%20River_1edited-1_zpsuqjt0ll4.jpg) (http://s783.photobucket.com/user/wshawkins/media/Trip%20Reports/Autumn%20Brown%20Trout%20Fishing/Tuolumne%20River_1edited-1_zpsuqjt0ll4.jpg.html)

The Tuolumne River has its beginning in Tuolumne Meadow.  At an elevation of approximately 8600 ft., it is the largest sub-alpine meadow in the Sierra Nevada.  The Tuolumne River runs within the tall grasses of Tuolumne Meadows.  Rainbows, Brookies, and Brown trout all inhabit this section of the river.  The Brown trout that I was targeting ranges up to approximately 16“.  Dry Fly Fishing is the best technique and most fun method in this tall grass meadow section.  Readily catchable trout are yours as long as you don’t spook them, so stealth approach is mandatory.  In mid-October when I was there, the fish keyed on my pale morning dun and a small yellow salley.  Caddisflies also did very well in the evenings.  Tuolumne River offers world class fly fishing at its finest!

This was the only time I saw any other fishermen during my whole week!  And most of the other fishermen appeared to have fishing guides with them, which I found a bit odd!  I was doing OK but did much better as I got some distance from them.  Tuolumne Meadows is a large area so no problem in getting some private fishing waters.  I found the Brown Trout section about a mile from the main road.

Day 2:  Dana Fork, Yosemite

Dana Fork

Dana Fork waters originate from 13,100' Mount Dana.  The Dana Fork is very accessible as Highway 120 in Yosemite runs right alongside its entire course from its head waters at Tioga Pass to where it joins the Lyell Fork.  Rainbow, Brook and Brown Trout are present throughout the Dana Fork, with the Browns being the most numerous, reaching up to about 12” for me.  This is a great stretch of water to fish for Browns.  Start your quest at Dana Meadows and it shouldn’t be long before you’re into the Browns.  Hike away from people and remember to “stealth” fish this body of water.  If you spook them they won’t bite!

I was able to fish both Dana Fork and Lyell Fork in the same day as they are fairly close together.  The Lyell Fork originates near 13,115' Mount Lyell, and flows 10 miles downstream through Lyell Canyon where it meets the Dana Fork, at where it forms the Tuolumne River.  Road access here is at the lower end, but the river is accessible via the John Muir Trail which runs its entire length.  Although the trail is highly travelled, very few ever fish it.  The Lyell Fork has a healthy population of wild trout with the Brown's being more numerous (up to 14”) in the lower section.  I found the Brook Trout gather towards the head waters.  The Rainbows are scattered throughout so hard to pinpoint where they lie, but look in the fast sections of this fork.  The Lyell Fork offers fantastic dry fly action, and with a good presentation the Browns will rise to most any of your dry fly’s offerings.   Again, stealth fishing is the key to success here.

Thanks for taking the time to post this WSH.  Greatly enjoying it.

I am surprised and pleased to see the relatively decent water levels in the pics - I have experienced far lower in past Octobers and the size of the fish are reflective of a healthy fishery despite the drought, receeding glaciers at the headwaters, etc.

Looking forward to the report on your trip to Spillway Lake! :fishing4:

The waterways do look surprisingly at good levels.  I spoke with Andrew at SLR during the past month and it was the thunderstorms that raised Silver Lake almost one foot overnight.  Maybe they've contributed to these levels, too.

This is a wonderful divergence.
Title: Re: Autumn Brown Trout Fishing
Post by: wshawkins on November 15, 2015, 09:18:20 AM
Yeah, the decent water levels were mostly due to some recent heavy thundershowers that also dropped some snow on the higher elevations, which I ran into heading to Spillway Lake.  There was a heat wave going on that week so the snow didn’t last long, which made for a muddy hike out as it melted.

For those who have not been to Yosemite for the past few years, the entrance fee per vehicle has gone up to $30 now, but it’s still good for one week.

Day 3:  Spillway Lake, Yosemite

Spillway Lake and the Kuna Crest

(http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy115/wshawkins/Trip%20Reports/Autumn%20Brown%20Trout%20Fishing/DSC05849_edited-1_zpsrfkrjlwd.jpg) (http://s783.photobucket.com/user/wshawkins/media/Trip%20Reports/Autumn%20Brown%20Trout%20Fishing/DSC05849_edited-1_zpsrfkrjlwd.jpg.html)

Spillway Lake is a pretty, if not spectacular, high-country lake, at elevation 10,480 feet with 12,000+ foot mountains rising from its south and west banks.  It’s been a few years since I last visited this lake, so I’m excited to finally revisit this part of Yosemite.  It’s an 8 mile hike (round trip) to Spillway Lake with about an 800 feet elevation gain.

To get there, you start at the Mono Pass Trailhead in Yosemite.  The Mono Pass trailhead is at the far eastern end of Yosemite, just a mile west of Tioga Pass Yosemite entrance station.  If you're approaching from the east, you should pass the trailhead within a few minutes of entering the park on your left.

Start of Trail to Spillway Lake

(http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy115/wshawkins/Trip%20Reports/Autumn%20Brown%20Trout%20Fishing/DSC04361_edited-1_zpsfhsidzsv.jpg) (http://s783.photobucket.com/user/wshawkins/media/Trip%20Reports/Autumn%20Brown%20Trout%20Fishing/DSC04361_edited-1_zpsfhsidzsv.jpg.html)

The Mono Pass Trailhead gives you several choices for destinations.  One is to take it to Mono Pass for views of Mono Lake and the Sardine lakes down below.  You could take it all the way down to Little Walker Lake Trailhead if desired.  Another destination is the Parker Pass trail that takes you Alger Lakes and beyond.  The third choice is Spillway Lake, where I’m heading.

The trail follows a pair of creek drainages, first Parker Pass Creek, and then the Spillway Lake outlet that ascends gradually throughout, alternating between woods and meadows along the way.  The rich greenery is a dramatic contrast to the stark, dry rocks of the eastern Sierra slope a few miles away, which you'd get to see if you took the Mono Pass fork instead.

Your route to Spillway Lake follows the Mono Pass trail for the first 2.3 miles.  It then veers right at the signed Spillway Lake fork.  You'll reach the lake in another 1.7 miles.

I was surprised by the amount of snow on the trail.  It snowed a few days before this hike.  Thought it would have melted by now, but it was frozen in the morning and slushy and melting fast on the way back to the trailhead.  The trail follows Parker Pass Creek right up to Spillway Lake.  I spotted several fish darting around in the ponds in Parker Pass Creek.

As you come out of the forest, you climb a gentle hill into a large meadow, which runs next to Parker Pass Creek as you view Spillway Lake for the first time.

And, if you love the sounds of fish jumping, this is the lake for you.  Spillway Lake is actually a great fishing location, and one of the species in this lake is the Brown trout!  And, because not a ton of people make it out here, you may end up having the lake all to yourself!

Over the years fishing at Spillway Lake, I’ve averaged equal amounts of Browns to Brookies.  Browns were up to 14” but averaging about 12”.  I seen Brookies up to 16” but averaging 10-12” or so.  No stunted trout here, all were full bodied and wild!

Fishing was non-stop from morning when I first got there, to the afternoon as I was getting ready to leave, it never stopped.  Best fishing I ever had for Browns and first time I ever caught double figures for Browns in a day of fishing overall.  Best fishing I ever had at Spillway Lake, hands down.  But as I was leaving Spillway Lake I fished near the outlet and caught my last fish, a Rainbow!  This was another first as I never have seen a Rainbow trout in this lake, and a full bodied 12” at that!

Rainbow Trout

Anytime Tioga Road is open is a great time to visit Spillway Lake.  But, I suggest coming mid-to late summer or later in fall as I did, as to avoid the early snows and the marshy like atmosphere that attracts the many mosquitos in the early season.  It’s a trade-off, as spring to early summer is amazingly beautiful with all the greenery and flowers blooming, but you will pay with your blood (with lots & lots of mosquitos!).

Autumn Brown Trout Fishing

Day 4:  Upper McCabe Lake, Yosemite

I launch my trip to Upper McCabe Lake from the Saddlebag Lake Resort. Unfortunate, the water taxi shuttle service was closed down for the season so that added another 3 miles to my total for the day.  There is a trailhead by the campground with plenty of parking. This is a very popular place due to the 20 Lakes Basin.

To be truthful, it is a difficult hike to Upper McCabe Lake, especially getting over Shepherd Crest.   Once you get settled from the trailhead, cross the dam and hike past Saddlebag Lake to the inlet.  Take the trail clockwise toward Cascade Lake.  Pass between Cascade and Tower Lakes then head up the use trail north towards Secret Lake.  This lake is sometimes unnamed on maps.  Follow the chute to get over McCabe Pass. The views are spectacular from Shepherd Crest!  From the Crest, descend the staying on the right hand side where you’ll find a narrow chute that descends to Upper McCabe Lake.

The Views from Shepherds Crest are spectacular!  Well worth the hike just to see the views.  For those who continue to Yosemite and Upper McCabe Lake, fishing can be very fruitful too.

“The Fishing”

Fishing was spectacular!  Sight-casting to hundreds of rises and bubbles, I had a strike or fish on most casts.  I caught mostly beautiful wild husky Rainbows in the 12-15” range, but several nice sized Browns came up to make a run at my fly.  For the two hours I spent here, the trout in this lake tore at my fly until it was only mostly bare metal at the end.  Trust me as I say this was truly epic fishing at its best, especially in the high country of Yosemite in the rugged-terrained backcountry, possibly the most beautiful place in the world.

Rainbows are much more plentiful than Browns in Upper McCabe Lake.  Figure about 10 to 15 Rainbows to 1 brown caught.  Good thing fishing was awesome today as I was able to bring in 2 Browns.

Day 5:  Fall Colors

After yesterday’s hard hike to Upper McCabe Lake, I needed an easy day to rest my weary bones.  Fall colors were in peak form at many Eastern Sierra locations, so I packed a lunch and a cooler with drinks and off I went.  I started my fall color show at Rock Creek Lake then moved up north and the colors were just great everywhere I visited.  Even if you’re not into fishing, come for the fall colors as they are just spectacular!

Day 5:  Fall Colors at Rock Creek

I started at Rock Creek Lake as fall colors above the lake near Mosquito Flats were past peak.  But fall colors from Rock Creek Lake down to about East Fork Campground area were in prime form during my visit.  The fall colors around Rock Creek Lake were the best I’ve seen in years.

Had to stop at the “Pie in the Sky” cafι, but as luck would have it, they were out of pie!  That’s been an ongoing theme for me here.  I never tasted their pies to date and I’ve been up here countless times.  Maybe next year!

Missed the Spillway Lake post earlier. We were there in mid June and had a great time. Highlight was about a 12" brown that when I released it somehow got snagged by the fly and took off pulling my spinning rod into the lake. I stood there watching the rod slowly moving into deeper water. I finally woke up and jumped in after it.. Would have made a good video.

McGee Creek Canyon was at full bloom on my visit all the way from near Lake Crawley up to the beaver pond, which was unusual.  Usually it’s good at the higher elevations or the lower elevations, but not both at the same time.  Made for a beautiful day!

WSH - Once again, Thank you from many of us who greatly enjoy your posts, both the photos and narrative, and the amount of time and hard work it takes to produce them on this board for our enjoyment.

As always, the composition of this report, the photos and the narrative are, in a word, SPECTACULAR!

This year's trip sure appears to have been fantastic in all aspects that you have shared with us.  I am equally happy for you and politely envious.

So here are just a few of my normal, inquisitive-natured and vicarious-related questions please:

Have you ever camped overnight at either of the McCabe Lakes during any time of the 'year'?
For camping, do you recommend the Upper or Lower based on the effort required to get to not only Upper but down to Lower and back up, and the risk/reward of the 'labor' to pack-in for both camping and fishing vs simply the 'longer/shorter' in and out same Day Hike?
If so, any suggestions/additional experiences you are able to share based on current regulations, no-fire zone, Bear activity, etc?
Is Lower McCabe more forested and 'comfortable' and/or secluded than Upper (for camping purposes)?
"      "          "     safer to 'seek shelter' during a major storm?
Does the day hike entry into the park over Shepard's Crest 'technically' require a YNP entry/backcountry permit of any sort?

Thanks again on behalf of many of us!

Best, P A C

Upper McCabe Lake looks Spectacular. PAC asked most of the questions i have but one question is does that trail go all the way to the lake or is there boulder hopping. Is the Creat dangerous if you're careful? I'm too old for that now but I might send MJ up there next season. Ha!

Thanks PAC.  Appreciate the comments.  On your questions for McCabe lakes:

I camped overnight at both Lower and Upper McCabe Lakes over the years.  Both lakes are gems.  For camping, I prefer Lower McCabe as it’s surrounded by a forest that keeps the winds at bay.   Upper McCabe Lake has some trees but can get very windy.  But the advantage for Upper McCabe is that it has the best fishing with larger trout.  Just stake your tent really good as I almost lost mine one year due to the high winds.  The two lakes are about 1.5 miles apart and about 700 foot elevation difference.

There is two more McCabe Lakes, Middle and Tiny McCabe.  But both are fishless (Gillnetted some years ago).

You’ll need a Yosemite Wilderness Pass for overnight stays, none for day hikes.  No fires allowed except for stoves.  No bear activity observed around the McCabe Lakes, except down where McCabe Creek runs into Return Creek in Virginia Canyon.

As for fishing, flies and lures will do the trick.

bj, the trail ends at Secret Lake.  The Crest can be dangerous if you take the wrong route.  Most people look on Google Earth or a Topo map and take the Cascade Lake route over to Upper McCabe Lake.  That would be a big mistake as it’s a cliff face on the Yosemite side.  Best to take the route I described.

I do have more detailed photos that show the best route through the chutes that get you over the Crest if you like to view them.  Keep in mind that even taking the best route still makes this a very difficult hike.

Fall colors were spectacular way up the McGee Creek Canyon.  So I took the McGee Creek Trail to see how far up the fall colors went.  Ended hiking all the way up to the Beaver Pond.  Spectacular easy walk, best I ever seen in McGee Creek Canyon!

Great shots of the pond. We've taken two horseback rides up there, what a neat spot. I understand that that the FS  tore out the dams and removed the beavers some time ago and guess what. Maybe Scout knows the story.

Day 5:  Fall Colors at Convict Lake

Convict Lake never fails to impress with classic color around most of the lake.  Convict Lake, Convict Lake Resort, the campground and the creek were all looking good but the fall colors around the lake looked the best this autumn.

One of the fun things you can do In Mammoth Lakes is off-roading.  You can four-wheel drive right to the best fall color if you’re adventurous enough.

Mammoth City, opposite colorful Mineral Hill (now known as Red Mountain) where the Mammoth mines are located, stood the town of Mammoth City.  During 1878-79 sprouted a mining camp of perhaps a thousand people.  Mammoth City - the center for the nearby, smaller camps of Pine City, Mill City, and Mineral Peak - is said to have had 22 saloons, 13 stores, 2 breweries, 2 livery stables, 5 restaurants and 2 newspapers.

The Mammoth Lakes Basin is always a pleasant place to visit, especially during fall when it’s practically void of people.  Vistas are very nice too!

Finally, the fall color show is over.  Hope all you enjoyed it.  Highly recommend for you to get up to the Eastern Sierra some autumn day and see this beautiful nature show for yourself.  Now back to Autumn Brown Trout Fishing.  Next is Day 6 where I head to Long Lake in Bishop Creek Canyon where I attempt to catch the allusive Brown Trout……………………………………………………………….

Awesome detour from fishing wshawkins! Rock Creek Lake was the best ever, and the June Lake Loop, and Silver Lake are just drop dead beautiful! I thought it was interesting how you switched from fishing to autumn pictures in your fishing thread and focused on fishing in your media thread. Very Cool!
Thank's again for your contribution

Yeah, I have been all over the place with these threads.  The fall colors did a number on me, just had to take some time off from my fishing trip to photo the beautiful autumn displays.  But I’m back to the focal point of these threads now, but I did run into more Autumn Colors on some of my hikes to Autumn Brown Trout Fishing. :fishing3:

Autumn Brown Trout Fishing

Day 6:   Long Lake, Bishop Creek Canyon

This was my second time up to Bishop Creek Canyon this season.  Came up first in August 2015 for a week doing some serious hiking and fishing.  That was a great trip!  This late Autumn trip was just for the Browns!  Bishop Creek Canyon has several backcountry lakes with Browns in them and some are pretty good sized!  For this day I visited Long Lake, probably the easiest (at least for me) to catch the Browns.

Long Lake is a 4.2 mile (roundtrip) hike on Bishop Pass Trail from South Lake.  I recommend starting your fishing at the inlet, which will make it close to 6 miles (roundtrip).  I also like to fish the deep water near mid-lake here as the Browns seem to hang in that area.  Browns are pretty easy to spot in late fall as they tend to cruise the shoreline looking for an easy meal, but they do spook pretty easy so no sudden moves if you don’t want a skunk.  They can get north of 20” in Long Lake.  The Rainbows and Brookies are more populous here so use the fly’s the Brown Trout love.

I usually catch equal number of Brookies to Rainbows.  Best to Spot fish for Browns for success as well as casting in the deep waters.  Be patient and you’ll catch them with the right presentation and fly.

I remember posting something last year about the monster brown I saw when I first got to Long Lake. At least 5-6 lbs. I am a believer that there are big browns in that lake.

Yeah, there are some nice size Browns in this lake.  This one was a bit over 20” and about 2 to 2 ½ lbs. I estimate.  Caught a couple of smaller Browns (12” to 16”) earlier before I hooked this one.

There quite a few Brown Trout lakes in the Rock Creek area.  I could have spent the whole week here chasing the Brown Trout.  My favorites are the Hilton Creek Lakes.  It’s been a couple years since I been to the Hilton Creek Lakes, and that was a weekend backpacking trip.  It’s a bit of a hike for a day hike to the Hiltons, but the Browns are plentiful and fairly easy to catch.

Hilton Creek Lake Trail

Hilton Creek Lakes is about a 10.5 miles (roundtrip) if you’re heading to Davis Lake (Hilton #1).  Only the first two lakes have Brown trout in them.  Davis Lake seems to have the largest Browns but Hilton #2 Browns are easier (but smaller) to catch.  For this day, I decided to go to the first 4 lakes which added some miles to my day.

I first went to #4 Hilton Lake (Brookies), then #3 Hilton Lake (Rainbows), down to #2 Hilton Lake (Brookies, Browns, Rainbows) and finally to Davis Lake (Brookies, Browns, Rainbows).  Fishing was excellent at all the lakes I visited.  Also never saw another person at any of the lakes this day, no backpackers or day hikers.  It was almost eerie without another person around, just the sounds of nature.

The Trees around Davis and #2 Hilton Creek Lakes are slowly dying off.  Plenty of fuel for a fire if that’s comes to pass.

Yeah, the Pine Bark Beetles are destroying the trees up there.  Every season it’s getting a little worse than the year before.

For a day hike like the one I took for this report, I prefer starting at the trailhead near the Rock Creek Lodge.  Its steep shortcut and cuts about a mile off my hike.  If I’m backpacking I prefer the Trailhead above Rock Creek Lake as it’s a nice easy level hike.  Least favorite is the trailhead near the Crawley lake community.

Autumn Brown Trout Fishing

Day 8:  Little Walker Lake and CSI Lake

On my last day, I went to both Little Walker Lake and CSI Lake.  The bonus here was colorful fall colors to look at around both these lakes as I fished.  Little Walker gave up a Brown Trout pretty quickly, so I had plenty of time to go to CSI Lake and try my luck, which was more difficult fishing as usual but if you know me I’m very persistent.

First up is Little Walker Lake.  Walker Lake has Brookies, Rainbow and Browns in its waters.  Fishing can be good at times but as usual catching the Browns are the most difficult, but not impossible as you’ll see.

wshawkins, thanks for taking me to the familiar lake.  I even know the tree in that last picture.  Fall colors still are great to look at, too, along with the lakes and fish.  Great thread and report.  Looking forward to CSI and perhaps a monster brown!!

Wow, you must be real familiar with this lake if you know the tree in the picture!  :D   That is my favorite spot to catch the Browns in Little Walker Lake Saudust.  Fall colors coming up next.

Autumn is the best time to catch the beautiful fall colors at Little Walker Lake.

Little Walker Lake had a fire this season that started on August 14 and was 100% contained on August 31, 2015 burning 3676 acres.  It burned right down to the shore on the north side of Little Walker Lake and continued to Lee Vining Canyon closing Hwy 120 up to Tioga Pass for nearly a week.

Just a side note to the Kamloop Rainbows in Little Walker Lake:  Little Walker Lake is now being used as Broodstocks for Kamloops Rainbows.  CDFW is now stocking the lake with these Broodstocks.   You can identify these Broodstocks as their “adipose fin” is clipped off.  Any Rainbow with a clipped “adipose fin” should be released back to the lake.

What is an “adipose fin” you ask?  The “adipose fin” is the fleshy fin behind the larger dorsal fin and in front of the caudal (tail) fin.  Just in case you’re not a “fish geek” like me, here are some photos to help identify the mysterious fin.

Day 8:  CSI Lake

If you never heard of CSI Lake, search for Chris W. posts and you’ll see what’s possible at this Lake.  I think I might have made him proud on this fine day, as my luck here runs poor most times here.

I never have seen so many people on the trail and at CSI Lake before!  Leaf peepers were out in force today as the fall colors were in prime time for the CSI Lake and trail!  Again, I was the only fisherman on the lake today, but I could not shake off the hordes of the crowds of foreign tourist’s near me.  Something about a beautiful lake in fall colors with a fisherman makes for good pictures I guess?  Actually it was kind of funny the way to finish my trip with foreign tourists shooting dozens of photos, especially when I had a fish on the line. :D

Nice way to end my trip with a couple of beautiful 20” + Brown Trout.  Nice colors on these Browns.  The fishing Gods was truly smiling upon me this week.  Also caught a nice fat 18” Brookie at CSI Lake.  Pretty rare to see two large sized trout species in the same lake!  As usual, I released all trout for this week’s adventure, didn’t even have a bleeder this time which was great.  This trip was a lot of fun and hope I can come up with something exciting and different for next season!

Thanks all for reading!
