Title: Current Sierra snow pack vs. season averages
Post by: playingmenace on March 01, 2016, 08:36:47 AM
Last night I shot Dmatt over at Sierrawave an email asking how we stand currently, when compared to historical records.

He had an associate reply back, and qualified his answer by inserting water content in the snow, not just inches of snow. Their response is below:

Snow / Water Equivalents (inches) as of Feb 29, 2016 are as follows:

Central Sierra (Tahoe Basin) 87%
Southern Sierra (Mono and Inyo County) 74%

While I wish those numbers were greater, I have to say that I am pretty encouraged for a great season this year.

Think snow!

Just hiked back into our cabin at Rock Creek on Saturday.  We were up back in December so wanted to compare he snow levels and the snow level is about the same as it was in December.  There have been a few storms since, but there have also been some very warm days.  Looks like they will have a good week next week so keep the snow coming!

From Dennis at Sierra Wave:

MON MAR 07 2016

Third system in the series will impact the area into early Tuesday, leaving cool air and some upslope showers in place then. Mammoth Mountain has run is snow total up 56 inches in the last three days, pretty much a major snow event for them (and they are not done yet). Weak high pressure moves in later Tuesday thru Thursday(first break since Saturday), drying things out a bit. But not for long, as there is another system on the horizon for the weekend. Stay tuned for particulars…DMATT

Last I saw,  305 inches of snow on Mammoth Mountain so far this season,  and it does look like more is on the way in a few days :)
