Title: LLV Trail Conditions
Post by: longnstrait on July 24, 2017, 03:59:05 PM
Anybody have a recent report on trail conditions up to Chickenfoot and/or Ruby lakes? I'm headed up on Wednesday and was wondering about snow, mud, mosquitos, water crossings etc.
Thanks in advance

Longnstraight,
Did you head up to Chicken foot last week? I'm curious to hear about trail conditions.

Thanks,

I day hiked up LLV trail a little over a week ago and can say the trail is very wet in spots.  Parts of the trail are running like a creek but nothing that bad.  Some snow on trail if youíre heading to Gem Lakes, but again nothing you canít handle.  There is one crossing where you might get wet before Long Lake as the upper creek is still running heavy.  All the lakes I visited were ice free.

Fished Gem, Chickenfoot and Long Lake on this day hike and caught fish in all.  Gem fished well for Brookies, Chickenfoot had equal numbers of Rainbows and Brookies and Long Lake fished best for Brookies.  The fish were mostly top feeding due to the cold water temperatures, so sight casting with flies worked great. Caught some of the largest Brookies I ever caught in Little Lakes Valley this trip.  Would show some fish porn photos but there is trouble with the Photobucket hosting site?

Mosquitoes are out in force as thereís standing water everywhere, but the wind and thundershowers kept them at bay for most of the day.  Have fun!

Yes I did as a matter of fact. Like wshawkins said it is wet in a lot of places and crossing at Long Lake was interesting with a dog. We decided to go thru the water rather than across logs but for humans a log cross is the best route. I found that I needed a wet fly on the day I went as a dry mosquito did not yield much. Overall it was great tho, no real snow to deal with on trail although if you venture up higher it gets more difficult. I talked to a couple of backpackers on their way to Golden Lake one day and saw them the next day at Ruby Lake. I asked how much snow they encountered at Golden and they said they never made it because of the snow. They ended up spending the night at Ruby. There is still some snow and ice around Ruby but you can walk around the Lake if you really want to, it's just a little tougher. Enjoy! (and yes there are mosquitos out)
