Wow, Tim...you read my mind.  We just stumbled upon these mines about a week ago when we were driving the back roads of Mammoth.  It's amazing...I have been coming to the Rock Creek area for over 35 years and I still find new things that I didn't know existed.  The mine is at the end of Coldwater Campground and there is a nice loop trail that takes you by the various buildings.  Good post!

Just think of that: room and board in Mammoth for $1.25 a day. ;D

I was thinking of doing a report of this mine later this year.  Looks like you beat me to it Creek Dude!  Iíve been to this mine many times, last time in August.  Real easy to get to and a nice easy loop trail that covers the mine, buildings and equipment that was left behind.  Excellent written article on this mine.  Very accurate from the books and articles Iíve read.  The writer did their homework!

Highly recommend a tour if youíre in the Mammoth Lakes area.  Take a free booklet thatís provided at the trailhead so you know what youíre looking at!

A few pictures from my last visit.

Many more Adits and mine equipment and buildings to see.  They even have an old car (Whatís left of it) sitting on the property.  Check out the old portable air compressor with the wooden spokes on the tires!  Real cool stuff!

Here is the old vehicle found at the mine site.  Not much left but thought maybe somebody who's big into old cars might recognize what vehicle this might have been?  Also took a picture of the engine.  Flathead six possibly?

You can see why this mountain was mined with all the quartz rock visible.  Gold and silver was always found in the quartz vein.  This photo also shows the track used by miners to move the ore bins to the crusher.  Notice there are no supports in the mine.  That was because it was solid granite rock.  Still makes me nervous to stand in the mine!
