So many great places!  I would also vote for Coldwater Campground, but be sure to learn about the three main trailheads and which hikes start there.  Every time we have been there, we encounter hikers who are not going where they think they are going!

Hello Hardrock.  I spend a lot of time at Tahoe because I am lucky to have a sister who lives in Meyers.  So I have done a bit of hiking there, mostly Carson Pass area.  just wondering if you can recommend a hike that is comparable to Rock Creek in scenery and relative ease for an old person.  So far R.C. is my favorite of any in the Sierras.  There is just something magical about the place!

Got home yesterday after 3 days at Mammoth.  Wednesday we hiked Convict but turned around when we got to the rockslide after the switchbacks.  One of us has very bad knees!  Thursday it poured at Mammoth all morning but we toured the lakes basin in the afternoon.  Friday we hiked Rock Creek trail.  Nice color on the beautiful new road, but we were surprised the last part was unimproved.  Oh well, that might keep the traffic down.  Made it to Long Lake but  the weather got really threatening looking so we headed back.  Of course it had improved by the time we got back to the parking lot!  But it was after 4:00 and a couple of Roberto's enchiladas lured us back to Mammoth.  Nice visit, but much too short.  Apparently it rained at Mammoth Saturday anyway.
P.S to fishermen:  You should have seen the huge trout a guy caught at Convict!

We can all agree that drought is a bad situation, but on the bright side, maybe there will be a window between when the Little Lakes trail is accessible without snowshoes and the beginning of construction!?

Thank you.  We can hope for a Feb. and/or March "miracle!"  That does sound like a beautiful hike.  How far from the trail head did you have to start?

I am still waiting for enough snow to visit my sister near Hope Valley (Tahoe area) and ski in the meadows there, but the outlook is bleak...   I was wondering about the situation at Rock Creek Lake.  Are they skiing there?  Can anyone just drive in, park, ski?  If so, where would that be?  I would appreciate any info about the conditions and logistics of xx skiing at Rock Creek Lake!  Thanks.

Any educated guesses on when the trail might be hike-able to Gem Lake?  It has been a long winter even for a short winter and the itch to hit the trail is emerging.  Maybe there is some upside to the low snowpack........

October is usually the peak.  Here are some scenes from mid-October 2011.  That was just a little past the peak.

Eastern Sierra Forum / Re: Smoke from fire?
« on: August 13, 2013, 03:22:38 PM »

We are soooo looking forward to our annual week at Mammoth starting Sept. 1 and hiking at Rock Creek and other Eastern Sierra trails.  On August 1, I drove up 395 on my way farther north.  The smoke was very heavy from Bishop to quite a bit north of Mammoth.  The radio reports were for stage 1 advisories although it looked much worse to me and there was hardly a mountain to be seen.  They were also reporting cancellation of some events.  I had heard about three guys who were going to try for the John Muir Trail speed record, 3 days over that weekend.  Never did hear what became of that.  On my return trip I took a different route.

I just checked Sierrawave. net, which gave the "final smoke report" and then said that smoke was expected on and off all summer.

Would appreciate any first hand observations by people who have been there recently?

I don't suppose any of the Eastern Sierra trails are hike-able now after the recent weather?   Anybody know about the trail conditions for Rock Creek, Convict Creek, Bishop Creek and South/Sabrina Lake?
