Eastern Sierra Fishing / Mammoth Lakes
« on: April 18, 2017, 03:54:47 PM »
Hello everyone. Due to some good advice from all of you I have planned a trip to coldwater campground in the mammoth lakes area.  I plan to get some good fishing in with my boys and was hoping for some more advice.  I want to do some of the area hikes but not sure I will be able to hit all the lakes. I've seen wshawkins Lake McCleod post and that is definetly one we will hit up to try our luck for some cutties. Any other suggestions such as TJ lakes vs Crystal Lakes?  I've heard crystal may even have some golden hybrids.

Of course we will try some of the bigger lakes. Any suggestions on which of the lakes for smaller kiddos? Twin, May, and George all look great and I wish I had enough time to see everything.

I hope to post some pics when we get back in July.  I will also post our June trip to RCL. Lots of good summer fun coming up I can't wait!

Hello all I hope everyone stays high and dry over the weekend. It's really been a pleasure reading posts from this site and I especially appreciate all the pictures that I can live vicariously through.

I wanted some suggestions from the experts here. My family is able to take an extra trip to the sierras this year. We always do rock creek of course usually east fork and every year we also do a second trip to Reds meadow.  So I wanted some suggestions on what everyone else thought is their other favorite place to car-tent camp. My only musts is that the wife likes her flushable toilets and I have to have good fishing nearby for me and my 3 boys whether that be camping by a lake or some good close backcountry lakes.  I've been thinking about silver lake or maybe twin lakes sites.  Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks again  :campfire2:

Were you fishing from a boat? I usually have to at least a 1/4 oz sinker to get it off the shallow water shelf (unless I wade out in my flip flops). Just curious how you got it out with the small slip shot. Thanks again

Beautiful pics! That golden has great color especially for a lake specimen.  It seems to me that the smaller creek goldens have more color that the lake goldens. Would you say this is true 'hawk?

Beautiful fish! I've seen pictures of a guy who fishes Rush creek every fall and has caught Browns in the 18-20 lb range for the past couple of years! I find that amazing.
Good luck on your trip!

I third the notion of that's even such a thing :)
Would love to see some pics of your golden trout adventures!  I'm still looking forward when my boys are big enough so we can take our first backpacking trip in search of some goldens! Thanks for letting me live vicariously through your pics until then.

Thanks again guys.
Two further questions
1. Where can I buy the rock creek special fly? Do they have it at the resort shop?
2. Has anyone had good success on a fly and bubble wooly bugger at the main lake? wanted to have my 9 y/o try something different than just the nightcrawler/powerbait.

Thanks again!

As far as the hike I plan to do that on day 3 to get acclimated, but still won't go too far in. Thanks again!

Hello everyone.  I'm headed up to east fork the end of this month with my boys for some rock creek action. I can hardly wait!!
We have stayed in the area before but this is the first time camping at east fork.  I could use some advice on where some of you get your firewood. Is outside wood allowed? I didn't see it posted anywhere on the campground website.
Also, this is the first year I will be taking the kiddos hiking into little lakes valley.  Any tips on the best fishing lakes in the to get them on the fish?  It seems from what I've read any of the lakes are a good bet for some brookies.  I think we may go as far as chicken foot but I think that will be it since I'm not sure how long the 5y/o will last. I was thinking heart lake may be a good place to spend some time but appreciate any advice.

Thanks for any advice in advance. I'm so stoked!

The LLV trail is perfect for kids......last year my 3.5 year old and my 5 year old hiked all the way to Heart Lake and back by themselves. We fished a lil but wont bring our rods next time. The kids had way more fun fishing the creek in our campground and at the inlet at the lake. That Canyon is special. I am a relative Newbie only been going past 4 years, but try and go 2-3 trips a year. Started when my boys were 2.5 and 1.5 years old. They love it.

When will you be up there?

Hi, thanks for your advice.  We plan to be up mid August.  I can't wait!  We only have a day and a half so we may just stick to the lake and creek as you said.

Thanks again for everyone's advice!

Thank you both for your comments. I think the boys can handle a short adventure (dad is really wanting one).  I was looking at Mack lake and looks pretty close so we may have to hit that up in addition to the rcl.

Thanks again!

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site.  I started an annual trip with my boys last year up to the Eastern Sierras.  I'm planning on taking them over to Rock Creek since I've hears such great things about it, but I don't know the area real well.  My boys are 7 and 4 and any suggestions on best places in that area to get them on the fish would be much appreciated.  I've heard the little lakes valley is nice, but not sure if it will be too much of a hike for the little guy.

thanks again
