Fishing 4 Gold, most float tubers fish the south end at Silver Lake.  There's a parking area off the road there with easy access to the lake, plus a convenient restroom.  I've done best with Olive Matukas and Wooley Buggers with a small split shot.  There are two channels that run north/south through the lake at that end.  The drop offs can be holding on both.  You'll cross a bed of shallow growth underwater as you enter in that area and jsut pass Wallace Berry Island the first drop occurs.  You'll know, the growth disappears.  Dry flies are best t match the hatch or you can talk to Andrew or Gary in the General Store for some tips.  Per PAC, the wind can be brutal, but the south end has the best protection.  Hey, try the shallows near where Rush Creek enters and at the outlet on the north end, too.

Tight lines!

Wow. The road has changed to Mike's since I went there in '74.  They had a couple Caterpillar tractors, a DC9 and skip loader as I recall, that would head out to get people 'unstuck' on the roads.  Cool trip, John!  Thanks for the pics and sharing it.  For $70 a night including 2 meals you scored there, too!

Welcome to the Board!  If you're planning a trip to Alger Lakes I'd think your best option is to plan to spend the night tenting it there, but I doubt if the lakes will be open in June.  Probably still frozen tight.  Later in the season the pack station can get you there, but if you're inclined to hike it's a bit of a boot crunch.

Enjoyed it as always, wshawkins!  Your coverage of the lakes, trails and fish pics are inspiring and much appreciated.  Sets my mind to wandering for sure.  Thank you!

I remember him stating that he would cast 350 to 400 casts up there at, CSI Lake, or at least that's the number that stuck in my mind.  It hurts to think about casting that much!

Colors are beautiful, wshawkins!

Welcome to the Board, WW.  I'm confident someone here will be able to shed some light on your question.  Basically, you can stay from Bishop to Mammoth and be relatively close, and further north is June Lake.  We don't stay in the immediate area, but do love the Silver Lake Resort in the June Lake Loop.

LHR, after SLR this is my most favorite region to explore!  The ruins out of Merida are in fantastic shape.  Chi Chen Itza no longer allows passage up the narrow steps of the main temple, but years ago it lent the most amazing feeling to stand on top and imagine what might have occurred below...or on top (yikes).  Nat Geo looks to be the host of hosts!  So cool to be there in November.  Great timing for the weather!  Iguana tamales?  Ah, put it all to use!  I can hardly wait to see more pics and share your experiences.  Thanks so much for this post!!!

Probably a rare photo of the Upper LC Falls considering the trail, well, non-trail to get there.  I see in one photo where the trail disappears into the avalanche scree.  All fours, geez!

I can only imagine the trail coming up to Lake Helen.  Looking down it from the outlet to Lundy Canyon below it appeared incredibly steep and rugged.  This is going to keep being interesting along with the beautiful collage of colors.  Thanks!

Very cool, wshawkins!  My wife and I took the time to travel in mid-October through Dunderberg Meadows from Virginia Lakes Rd., coming out down just north of the Bodie entrance off 395.  We were on a storm front blowing easterly spitting rain at us while snow was touching down up on the peaks to the west.  Our first time taking that road.  Saw numerous rainbows (not the fish!), some double ones, some with beginning and end in sight.  No pot of gold at the end, but what was left of the aspen stands was generous enough for us to revel in its wealth of beauty.  I can close my eyes and remember the scent of the wet ground, undergrowth and aspens.  Your pictures take me far away from my desk.  Many thanks!

What is the elevation change from the trail head to West Lake, wshawkins?  Looking back down Green Creek Valley makes it look steep!

Beautiful Brookies, wshawkins, so colorful.  That looks like it was tough going to get to East lake through and over the snow.  Browns in West Lake?  Hmm.

Glad they caught him.
