I saw hundreds of fish at the lake last week and very few were over 12". Some float tubers were catching 50+  each with  sinking lines with green or black buggers, matukas, etc. but is this the new planting size? There were a few 5-6 lbs but not much in between.

Middle Gaylor can be fun near the inlet. Sometimes the wind in your face can make it a little difficult with a dry fly. Also. Upper Gaylor is a short hike and can produce a lot of action on your fly rod. Me, I always have a telescoping spinning rod with fly bubble along just in case. Lake Mary has some monster browns but you might need a boat or float tube. Good Luck!

Eastern Sierra Fishing / Re: First Golden Trout for 2017

Sorry to hear that bj.  Usually Cottonwoods 3 & 4 are productive.  We all have days like that.  Hard to figure them goldens sometimes.  But fishing was excellent for me last year.  Also fished the South Fork Lakes and did fine but smaller goldens.   :fishing3:

It was 2 years ago October when 4 and 5 were zeros. Did alright in 3 but mostly small. Many ions ago caught first golden ever. It was at South Fork. Caught 39 on one Adams fly  and 1 on a kastmaster. That hooked me on goldens.

Anxious to hear about your Cottonwood trip as we were shut out at 4 and 5 last time. I had wondered if the DFW ( I prefer DFG) had started their plan to restore the lakes to pure goldens only.

WSH:
Did they ever get the cutthroats in Francis? There was talk about it awhile back.

Are there fish in any of them? Last time to Dorothy it looked fishless.

My experience is even in low snow years the high lakes are  usually frozen and access is iffy. This includes Onion Valley, Bishop Creek an the Duck Pass area. Also, our last trip to the Cottonwoods was lousy. Shutout at 4 and 5 and a few little guys at Lake 3. This was in October. Usually 4 and 5 produce a lot of 14-16" goldens on flies and mini jigs.

Long Lake was my worst, they were landing in 100 Deet. Inlet end of Saddlebag Lake a close second, especially Greenstone and Odell Lakes.

I'm going to be on the Upper Owens on Sunday,  afterwards hopefully I can convince Salim to take a drive up Rock creek as far as we can go,  def. wanna get a lil video of what will prolly be a torrent of water,  should be quite a sight
The creek was wild and muddy at Tom's a couple of weeks ago.

Based on the snow at the main lodge last week, I'd guess about mid-June

Lost Lake is about half way between the upper Sherwin Lakes and Valentine Lake ( long narrow lake lying north- south). Sherwin Lakes look like a disaster area since so many trees died up there. Also, Valentine has a difficult shoreline to fish, not worth the effort to get there. IMHO

WSH  certainly covered the Lakes Basin. I would add that the McCloud can be tricky and the Cutts very fussy as to time of day and choice of fly. It's barbless hooks and no bait. Skelton is a little farther up the hill from Arrowhead but a little easier to fish especially for small kids.

Great report. My one trip to Tyee 5 several years ago, I caught a rainbow that was almost black. Seems someone posted a comment about it but can't remember for sure.

You should have seen it in 1951 with nothing but rickety old buildings and tumbleweeds. No signs, no people- talk about a ghost town.

A little different than our recent scenery. Just got back from a 6 day whale watching trip to southern Baja. Those rascals are BIG when they're close enough to touch.

I like Silver Lake but it's usually windy when I'm there. Lake Mary and Twin Lakes have CG's near the lake if you can pick a time when it's not too crowded. Coldwater CG is near the Duck Pass trail which has  several easy hike lakes nearby.

I was finishing civil engineering at San Diego State in 1960 and had put off taking the required dreaded speech class until the last possible time. One of the speech assignments was "To Convince" so I picked the speech to convince people to vote for the State Water Project which included bonds for the Oroville Dam. NJ has assured me that my speech was not responsible for the dam. Here's hoping they can pull off the necessary repairs in time for the next batch of storms.
