The road is open to the Pack Station, you can get to the boat docks, but not the upper end of the lake, at least as of noon today. Campgrounds are open up to East Fork. Rock Creek Lake is free of ice.
It just started snowing.....

It wasn't that bad....anybody that stayed past the weekend probably got chased out by last night's snow...Retired's timing is perfect.

It's open.

Hi Gale, welcome to the board. I remember those , I just called them fireballs, very impressive. I saw the Fourth of July show down there in the late 70's, they had at least one then.

It's actually very easy, especially in the back country creeks. Look at Tenkara USA websites, it's got the best reputation. The guy that's been teaching me uses his on the Owens, for bigger fish, I'm not that brave yet. Without a reel, you have to chase the fish up and down the bank...easy enough thirty years ago, not now. Small brookies are a kick in the butt....

I drove to the Pack Station this morning. Unless we have a real freak storm, the road is open. Ice on the Lake, open water at the inlet, outlet and Group Camp. Only a couple feet of snow left after the rain last weekend.

Looks good, nice picture.
Where will I find those instructions? I got a new computer, maybe I can post pics all by myself.

I ran into some CalFire crews at Von's in Bishop this morning, the fire is out, except for mop up.

Eastern Sierra Forum / Re: Snow Report?
« on: February 10, 2018, 01:02:35 PM »
I just got back from my weekly trip up the Canyon, the gate was open at East Fork, I was able to drive, on dry pavement, up to the Lake, actually to the Pack Station, the gate was closed there, but the road to Mosquito Flat was dry for as far as I could see. In all the years I've lived here, this is a first. The Lake has a few inches of snow, there are bare patches of dirt around the boat docks, I probably could have walked to the upper end without any problem.
It's going to be an interesting summer....

As of last Friday, my last trip to the spring, there wasn't much snow at East Fork, maybe three inches, you may not need your snowshoes, unless you want to hike to the Lake....the shady road into your cabin might have more snow on it. It's been in the 40s and low 50s in Crowley the last few days, not much snow here at all. This is one of the worst winters I've seen in a long time, if ever. Maybe a Miracle March?

Marine One...if you were to PM me before you come up to shoot, I can describe a good spot that's close, or take you there if you like....I don't like to publicize it, but I'll share with people I know....happy to do it.

Try calling the Resort, somebody in there should have heard something.

I just got back from driving up the canyon, here's what I found out. I couldn't find any "authorities", meaning USFS people, but talked to people who are staying in Iris, and who did spend time with a USFS employee yesterday, at the site of the "problem". It is between Iris and Big Meadows, older beaver dam(s) from the mid 80's. I remember fishing in there years ago, pretty nice, Not a huge dam, by any means, and built from small aspens and willow, not big logs. As the runoff started in force, the water started backing up behind the dam, and some people got concerned. Within a few days, the current had found it's own way around the dam, started a new channel, problem solved.
Sometimes you can just leave it to Mother Nature.....

I just drove by, the gate is open.

I talked with Jim King, from the Resort, yesterday, he had heard nothing official about this, only the rumors. I'm sure he would have been informed of any problems. Later in the afternoon, I ran into a Mono County Sheriff and asked him if he knew anything about it, he didn't. He said the Sheriff's Department would definitely know about  anything of that magnitude.
It will be a couple of days before I go up there, then I'll look around. I think I know where the dam(s) are, may be more than one. I'll see if I can find any USFS people that I can talk to.

I've been fishing the back country with a 6 foot 3 weight Orvis that I built in the mid 90's....I'm not chagrined at all.

Eastern Sierra Forum / Re: Snow around French Camp
« on: April 15, 2017, 12:33:55 PM »
I finally found the camp host in Tuff, he said the company still has May 5th as the opening date for Tuff and French, even though the snow is gone. Sounds like more politics than anything else,,,actually just sounds like BS...there's a chance they'll change their minds, I'll keep in touch with the guy, if something changes I'll let you know.
He did say that Holiday will be open if the other two aren't.

French Camp is now more dirt than snow...site 66 is clear, except for a small drift in the driveway, should be gone in a couple days. Now you just have to find out if they'll open for the Opener...I haven't seen anybody that I can ask.
If they don't open French or Tuff, Holiday should dry out soon, it should be open...but you never know.

The snow is melting in French, a couple of feet in some spots, bare dirt in others. No idea what to expect, the host is down in Tuff, but not in French yet. If I see the guy in Tuff, I'll ask him what they're planning. The road in French is plowed, but not the parking spots for each site. I'll go check out the upper end...you like #66, right?

It looks like they plowed all the roads through French Camp, except for the site driveways...they did the camp host site, but I didn't see any others done. I didn't go all the way to the top, maybe they're working on them up higher. A little more snow up there, maybe three feet in shady spots, but lots of bare dirt too...if it stays warm, it could be okay.
I wonder if or when they'll change their opening dates?

Cheer up, campers, all is not lost. They've plowed Tuff Camp all the way to the bottom, including plowing all the site driveways. It's kind of messy right now, mud and snow and running water, but if it stays warm, it could do the trick by the end of April.
They also plowed in French. I walked Tuff today, will go into French tomorrow, look for another report.

I didn't say it would be easy....
Walked into Tuff a while ago, the Bobcat is clearing the first loop of campgrounds, maybe two feet of snow down there...the truck is from a contractor in Bishop, so they may be paying big bucks for the work...maybe they'll do French? I think they could have waited a while, Mother Nature might have taken care of it anyway...my back yard has half the snow it had a week ago.

On my way to Sunny Slopes yesterday, I saw a truck, trailer and a Bobcat "loader" at the entrance to Tuff Camp. It looks like they're trying to clear the snow, but a Bobcat? Not the most powerful piece of equipment...I'll keep everybody up to date as to how far they get.
There's always Holiday...the gate's been open all winter.

That is the RV park across from McGee Creek Lodge...I checked there for some friends who wanted a site for opener years ago, they were booked way in advance. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try, but don't hold your breath.
Snow is melting fast at lower elevations (Tuff and French), 3 to 4 inches a day in my back yard, there's a month to go, things might change for the better. Open water starting to show on Crowley...who know what might happen?
