Photo problems kept me from posting pics of late June 19-22 trip up the NFBPC.  Cleared some trees across trail and caught fish at 1st and 4th lakes.  Creek  hard to fish due to heavy flow.

June 19-22
Water thundering down the mountain.  Trail good until 1st Lake where 2 trees are down across trail and snow begins.  More snow above 2nd Lake and trail is mushy and wet many places.  Trail from 3rd to 4th has plenty of snow and cleats would help.  Some drifts +10' and many snow tunnels getting thinner by the day.  Below 1st Lake there is a crossing (the stepping stones) that is normally doable without getting wet.  Good luck with that.  Fishing was good at 1st lake.  Photos to follow.  lf

Inflow from 2nd Lake.  Lots of water this year, lakes all full.  Fished up to 5th Lake; biting on everything.  Spent 1/2 a day breaking down illegal fire pits (some people still don't understand the "No Fires" sign near Black Lake junction).

Note to Hikers:  2 "widowmakers" at 2nd Lake Inlet camp.  Notified USFS 6_26_16.

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / Tioga Pass Trip Report 9/20 to 9/25

Beautiful week of "Glamping" at TPR.  Hiked Gardisky and Gaylor Lakes (jeez, stairways to heaven).  Straight up is the only way to describe those hikes.
Saddlebag is very low but LV Creek running well and full of fish. Side trips up to Twin Lakes.  Nada and windy.  Silver Lake and Rush creek.  Nada but beautiful.  RC looks slow and low.

Weather was perfect the whole time and well appreciated after coming up from Southern California.  Annual event for my Mrs. and I and it was a beautiful trip.  Cool little drive down the canyon to the Latte Da Coffee Café to check messages and keep up with the Biz.  Great Corn Meal Muffins and lots of hippies.  Very cool like Berkeley in the 60's.

Caught and released 14 fish over the week, largest +/- 18".  Wonderful trip.

Calendar adjustment has given me 4 days next week.  Looking at Onion Valley and the Kearsarge Pass Trail lakes and/or Robinson Lake.  Need a short walk to some fun fishing and peace and quiet.  I know it's a popular place just wanted a couple of nights in the Sierras.  Anyone have recent experience up there?  Thanks lf

Anything Goes / Get weather by GPS
« on: June 28, 2015, 11:37:55 AM »
Are there any tips for getting the weather using GPS coordinates?  I know I saw a NOAA map with that ability but I didn't bookmark it and can't find it again.  thanks.  lf

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / NF Big Pine Creek - 1st and 2nd Lake
« on: May 04, 2015, 08:38:16 AM »
1st Lake a little down but still beautiful; inlet from 2nd Lake dry with small input from "invisible" creek.  2nd Lake down, looks like at least 40 ft.  Someone please tell me they are working on the lake.  No creek flow into 2nd Lake.  Beautiful but sad.  Plenty of wind and not many fish.  1st Lake tragedy.  Why do people do stuff like this? No fires means no fires.

Is there going to be snow at 1st and 2nd Lake on May 1?

Can anyone give me information on this trail?  Condition, weather, fishing, general use and mileage from North Fork of Big Pine Creek to Bishop Creek Canyon.  Would like to try this if it is a reasonable pursuit.

I can squeeze one last trip in this year the week of Oct. 5-11.  I'm thinking OV due to it's proximity.  How is the trail, backcountry camping and fishing?  Robinson Lake? Flower Lake? Gilbert Lake?  What is the easiest to get out of in case of severe weather?  Any info will be appreciated.  Thanks, lf

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / 20 Lakes Basin - September 15-19
« on: September 20, 2014, 09:13:57 AM »
Took the Mrs. so we stayed at the Tioga Pass Resort, that's as close to roughing it as she gets!  5 beautiful days, Mon-Friday.  Drove up from Ventura on Monday, a long 6.5 hrs. with one stop for gas in Bishop.  BTW, Paiute Casino gas station at the north end of town is the cheapest gas in Bishop.

The fishing was absolutely terrible.  Fished some small rainbows in Lee Vining Creek, a tiny Brown at Shamrock and zippo at Steelhead.  Fished the inlet from Cascade and used a bubble fly with #16 Sierra Bright Dot. I watched a fish touch it with his nose and move on, it was hilarious.  Caught a ferocious little Brown in Shamrock and he actually gave me an angry look as if to say "put me back into the lake and be careful with that hook".  Best fish was a nice Brookie (Adams) in Lee Vining Creek and was able to release him unharmed, he too was none to happy with my company.

The weather was beautiful but windy up in the Basin and fishing mid day is never going to be ideal but it was a great trip to some beautiful country.
Taxi was running on the hour and seemed to be very busy as was the TPR.  Caught some smoke and haze coming out 6 AM Friday morning and it was fuzzy all the way to Little Lakes.  Thanks to everyone for all the tips and observations.  lf

The TPR was simple but nice and clean and that hot shower every night makes it well worth it.  A great couples getaway and will be back next year.  lf

Eastern Sierra Fishing / Backpacking a Float Tube
« on: July 19, 2014, 07:53:18 AM »
Any recommendations and/or comments on a back country float tube system. Floating around on a beautiful backcountry lake sounds lie heaven to me.  The total weight seems to be about 15 extra pounds but for a short trip that seems reasonable.  Any comments and recommendations would be appreciated.  Thanks again for all your help.  the lf

I would appreciate any comments or recommendations you might have with regard to EMC.  I caught plenty of flak from the Mrs. and my daughters over the last trip I took (solo to NF Big Pine Creek).  I never felt unsafe and I was well prepared but nevertheless 3 women against 1 littlefish is no contest.  The SPOT looks like a reasonable choice but I want to hear from you folks before I do anything.  Thanks again.  lf

Ok Creekers I need all the help I can get on this.  Drove  to Saddlebag Lake last September while staying at the Tioga Pass Resort and this year want to pack the 20 Lakes Basin. Need to hear the do's, don'ts, campsites, fishing and anything else that would be helpful.  Still struggling with my computer (Win 7 crash and reload) for pictures of trip to NF Big Pine Creek.  They are coming.  thanks again to all.  f

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / NF Big Pine Creek_June 23-26
« on: June 28, 2014, 05:09:14 PM »
I arrived at Upper Sage Flat Campground, June 23 to acclimate.  After lunch I hiked up the trail to First Falls just to see what I was getting myself into.  I entered the trail from the roads end at Glacier Lodge Rd.  It was a little over 3 miles RT.  7:00am 6/24 parked at the TH area and walked the regular trail.  Some people leave their gear at the roads end gate and start from there as the 1st mile is exposed on a hillside.  I think my pack was near 30 lbs. and I slogged my way up the mountain with frequent altitude adjustment stops as well as short water breaks.  The trail is in beautiful shape but is steeper in person than it looks on a map. After the 2nd Falls you begin your ascent towards 1st lake. It took 5 hrs to reach 1st Lake, another 2 to find a site and set up camp. Camped near the inlet from 2nd lake on a flat, sheltered spot with good water 50 yds. way. Other hikers told me all the water up there is potable but I still filtered.  I fished a little in the late afternoon and took a small Cutthroat and Rainbow on a Panther Martin.  6/25 hiked the loop that included 2nd, 3rd, 4th and Black Lake. All were spectacular and hardly a soul.  Fished at Black Lake and caught a small Brown and Cutthroat on a PM. The weather was perfect Tues and Wed. until about 4.  The trail out of 4th Lake towards Black Lake gets a little murky if you walk all the way around it and you have to pay attention to make sure your on the trail to Black Lake.  The trail down from Black Lake is steep and soft and I wouldn't ever walk up that trail.  The Temple Krag was magnificent and always visible. Late afternoon 6/25 the wind came up and blew all night 20-30.  I broke camp at daybreak and made it down the mountain in 2.5 hrs in sporadic rain and high winds. With many thanks to all those who advised, commented and helped me prepare for this trip. It was safe and successful and you can't do better than that.  Having trouble downloading pics, it's my computer, not the site.  More later.  lf

Mid Sept. a trip to HS.  The Mrs. will stay at the Silver Lake Resort while I hike to Gem Lake and return via Alger Lake.  Never been there before.  What is the trail like?  What conditions can I expect?  Do's and Don'ts.  Just emerging from the Greenhorn stage so all help and comments are appreciated.  lf

Eastern Sierra Forum / 2013 Dove Season
« on: August 23, 2013, 09:26:19 AM »
Good morning friends, Ventura is beautiful today, come visit some time.  Heading up your way next week, Aug 30, and looking to plink a few doves on opening day, Sept.1, and then head on up to Walker Lake for some fishing.  Lone Pine to Independence seems to be the best bet from information available online.  I'll be solo next week as my wife does not like roughing it.  Does anyone know of information resources (sporting goods store) in that area?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.
