I'm finally going to get in a few bag nights this weekend. Zero nights under the stars so far this year. Heading to Saddlebag Lake tomorrow thru Sunday, then a night at the creek. I hear Saddlebag resort closed yesterday, so no water/boat taxi. NBD, The walk around the lake is not too bad. I'll be trying to slam on Saturday. Kinda fun to leave camp early with a goal in mind. Praying for smokeless skies, and little wind. should be good one. good fishin!!

« on: July 14, 2015, 10:30:40 PM »
Just thinking that I've been to the Eastern Sierras once this season. Went up the first week of May, and have not been able to get back. Thanks for the pictures and reports. Looks like the 2015 Creeker gathering was another good one. Saw, and heard BJ playing Johnny Cash on Facebook. very cool! (Thanks Terry) I will finally be in Mammoth 7-31 thru 8-3 for the blues and brews festival. "The mountains calling, and I must go!" its been way to long!!

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / 2015 trip #2
« on: January 27, 2015, 10:27:53 AM »
Went up to Mammoth Friday to do a little fishing and see if it was possible to ski. I was supposed to meet people for big old man ski day but most bailed out due to the lack of snow. Three of us had good luck fishing the slow water where the river enters Pleasant Valley Reservior. Caught some nice size trout for the fish fry, with a 20 inch Brown as the jackpot! My buddy who rarely fishes caught it on a Nightcrawler. We actually skied a day even in the poor conditions. Mammoth has really good snow making equipment, so it was still great day! Very bare up there though. We would not have skied without the half price lift tickets my buddy got. Snowing now though! Come on big Spring!

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / 2015 trip #1

Went up to Bishop Jan. 2nd - 4th. Stayed at Toms Place for 2 nights. The fishing was really good in the slow water, just before the river turns to the Reservoir. We brought the bikes for the trip in from the upper power plant. Only took about 8-10 min. of easy pedaling to make it out to our spot. Never made it out before 9:00 am because it was just to darn cold. Warmed up to about 45-50 by noon though. Most fish were around 2lbs. I would guess. Nice, fat, strong 16- 18 inch Rainbows. I wish they would stock all our lakes like they do PVR. We usually do really well there. The creek was frozen with water running under the ice. Really pretty. Not much snow until you get up to the gate. Icy conditions on Mammoth contributed to my Nephew's trip tp Mammoth hospital. kid hit the ice so hard it caused huge blood clot in his thigh. There's some name for it, but I forgot what it is. Anyway, he had emergency surgery at the Mammoth hospital and is now home recovering. Atleast we were up there so he had some family to visit him while he was laid up. Luckily he's young and will fully recover. Mammoth hospital is really great! The took great care of him. Good to be up there! going back 1-23 thru 1-26. We need more snow! There's some, but not even close to where we need to be. Come on storms!!

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / final trip for 2014
« on: November 13, 2014, 09:19:52 AM »
Made a run to Mammoth, and the warm condo for the last trip of the year. Went to lake Mary and found the gate was locked at the Twin Lakes. Made the walk to Mary in about 20 min. or so, and it was worth the effort. I got a 4 pound Alpers Trout, only to be out done by a 5 pounder. Everyone caught fish that made the walk up. I saw a family that went to Mamie, and had some really nice trout! Lots of of smiles and great weather to boot. Sunday we went to Convict. Eveyone was fishing the South shore near back of the lake, with good reason too. We could see huge fish from the upper trail cruising all around. Every group had big fish on the srtinger. I caught lots of fish on Mice Tails, but did not hook into on of the big ones. One in our group did catch a 4+ ponder however. We had a big trout fry after hitting the Mammoth Brewery, which is the old Whisky Creek now. Awesome way to end the season! Now let it snow!! Good fishin!

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / Saddlebag Lake trip
« on: September 17, 2014, 09:15:50 AM »
Left Ventura County at 5:00 am Saturday for Tioga Pass and Saddlebag Lake. Made it up the hill and found a camp site at saddlebag around 1:00 pm. Slow trip up when you have to stop at Alabama Hills Cafe for breakfast, and do all the grocery shopping for the trip in Bishop. Did some fishing at Saddlebag after setting up camp. We caught lots of little trout, one after another. I Did manage 1 really pretty little Brookie, and a 12 inch Brown. Steaks and trout for dinner! Sunday my buddy wanted bigger fish, and I wasn't quite ready to make a hike out of the day so, back down the pass to the back side of Grant it was. Much warmer down that way. My buddy got his wish with a nice 2.5 pond Bow! We both caught some nice 12-16 inch rainbows as well. Monday we broke camp early and caught the 8:00 am water taxi to 20 Lakes basin. My buddy can hike with the best of them, but he took his time and hiked at my pace which was nice of him. Even at my pace we made to the Golden Trout area in about an hour and a half. Took a quick rest and started fishing. The last 2 times I fished these lakes I caught 1 fish total. Monday however, was one of the best days catching Golden Trout in my life! I caught 9 beautiful Golden's! One of which was a fat 16 incher! My buddy caught his share as well. Ever fish dry fly's with a fulll bubble? Well, it works! Elk Hair caddis w/ a full bubble was the ticket! We kept 3 each, which is 1 more than I usually keep. The fishing was just so darn good it was hard to walk away. I must say it was really nice to be at 10,000 + elevation when it's 100 + degrees down here. Great trip and heading back up Oct. 3rd! Will be camping in Rockcreek cyn. that weekend. Looking forward to it. I have some video that i will put up soon. Good fishin! Almost forgot, Got the Grandslam, but it took me 3 days. Still counts in my book.

Heading up 395 tomorrow for the 19th annual Bluesapalooza and festival of beers!! Should be good one with Buddy Guy and other great blues bands. I'll fish RCL in the mornings, then hit the festival in the afternoon. I also have a golf outing planned at Mammoth's Sierra Star Golf Course. Fishing, Golf, Blues, Brews, bikes and food.... not bad at all.

Eastern Sierra Forum / Gill netting
« on: July 21, 2014, 01:52:25 PM »
I heard a rumor that Golden Lake, Thousand Island Lake, and Wonder Lakes 1-3 will be Gill netted at some point in the future. No funding for these projects yet. I've been doing trips to Golden since the age of 6. One of my favorite lakes in the Sierras.  I think Golden Lake is self sustaining, and I thought self sustaining trout populations would be left out of the frog projects? Seems like the only news we get about fishing these days is bad news. Anyone have any inofmation about this? I used to sign off with "Good fishin!" I'm not so sure I'll be doing that much longer.

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / Rock Creek 6/20 - 6/23
« on: June 29, 2014, 11:13:51 AM »
Made my first true Summer trip last week. Got to Iris Meadow about 11:00 am on Friday just as #4 opened up. Nice site next to the creek. Set up camp then went up to the lake. I caught nothing, but my 2 friends got a few small ones. Saturday we went to Crowley and I caught nothing, My friends caught 2 nice fish each though. My buddies were having a good time with the skunk jokes. I really didn't mind. The weather was perfect, the bbq was hot, lot's of time to relax. The creek was full of fish right by camp, I ok with just kicking back. Sunday we drove up to Saddlebag. 2 of us took the water taxi in search of Goldens, the rest fished saddlebag. Awesome hike! lot's water spilling over the falls, the creek and meadow were beautiful. The fishing....... More of the same, Zero!! Great hike though. Went back to Saddlebag and finally the bite was on. I pretty much caught a fish on every cast. http://youtu.be/FPx-doDfrN8  This is old video of the same hike. Had a great fish fry Sunday night and drove home Monday. Good trip, even if i didn't knock em' dead fishing.

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / Bishop Mammoth trip
« on: January 22, 2014, 01:20:58 PM »
Went up 395 for the annual fishski trip, but only did the fishing part. Decided not to ski over the blown snow pack. Not worth the money this year. The fishing at Pleasant Valley Res. was great however. Caught lots of fish in the 2 pound range. Weather was perfect! Like Spring time with no wind. Not January weather at all. Not happy about the snow, kind of put a damper on the trip. Maybe I can get a day on the Mountain if we get the "Miracle March" storms. Mammoth was pretty dead for a holiday weekend. I know people with season passes that have yet to go. I hear June has 2 lifts running and sold 16 lift tickets last Sunday. My buddy who skied Mammoth said it was the worst conditions he ever skied. If the weather pattern does not change I'm planning my Summer trips in May and June. Come on Snow!!
