Eastern Sierra Forum / Hilton Lakes Hike
« on: July 03, 2018, 04:31:54 PM »
I'm planning on hiking up to fish the Hilton lakes for the first time this July. I'll be camping in East Fork. My question is what is the recommended route? Parking at Pine Grove and taking the switchbacks up or the longer route from the pack station?
Any tips on which of the lakes is best and methods are appreciated as well.

Eastern Sierra Forum / LLV Trail Conditions
« on: July 24, 2017, 03:59:05 PM »
Anybody have a recent report on trail conditions up to Chickenfoot and/or Ruby lakes? I'm headed up on Wednesday and was wondering about snow, mud, mosquitos, water crossings etc.
Thanks in advance

Eastern Sierra Forum / Contacting East Fork camp host
« on: July 24, 2017, 10:10:38 AM »
Help! I was supposed to be up at east fork today but due to a slight change in plans I won't arrive until Wednesday morning. I have a good camp site and I'm afraid if I'm a no show for 2 nights they might give my camp site away for the entire stay. Is there a way for me to contact the host and let them know I'm just going to be late by a couple of days and please do not give my site away?

Eastern Sierra Forum / Onion Valley - Smoke update and thoughts?
« on: September 16, 2015, 10:07:45 AM »
Does anyone know how the smoke is in the Onion Valley/Kearsarge Pass area right now? I was thinking about a quick weekend trip this weekend. I've camped there before but it has been years. I thought that by being a little further south it would save me some travel time up and back on such a quick trip. I then remembered that when I was in Rock Creek in late August that the smoke was really bad as I left RC and headed back down 395. I had one bad smoke day in Rock Creek Canyon, the rest were pretty good but as I left for home it was really thick as I went south. So bad I can't imagine hiking in it would be much fun or very healthy. I think it was from the Rough fire in Kings Canyon?
On another note, I was thinking of hiking and fishing Gilbert, Flower and then maybe heading over to Matlock lake. Has anyone fished those lakes? Matlock in particular?  looks a little more out of the way so I thought that might help to get off the main trail.
Appreciate any updates or thoughts.

Eastern Sierra Forum / East Fork Site details
« on: August 03, 2015, 04:43:05 PM »
Has anyone stayed at site 108 in East Fork before? I have a guys trip coming up and we all would prefer separate tents (4). The pictures online make it tough to tell if there is a lot of room for tents. I've stayed on 111 before and it was plenty big IMO. I know it is a step down but from the pics online all I can see is the parking spot. Any info is appreciated.
Side note is I just cancelled a few nights from my arrival including Friday and the weekend  (I  should have let people know ahead of time) but look quick and you might nab it still!

Eastern Sierra Fishing / Fluorocarbon vs. Mono
« on: July 15, 2014, 02:56:21 PM »
What's everyone using as their line of choice lately. Fluorocarbon? Mono? Mono on the spool and Fluorocarbon for leader? 4lb. with 2lb. leader? I need to replace the line on a couple of my reels and I would like to hear from the knowledgeable folks on here that are always so generous with their tips and advice. I mostly use spinning reels with bubble and fly, Thomas buoyants,  and sometimes even dunk power bait in a lake. I have always used mono in the past thinking that the line was so light it wasn't worth the extra cost to go to fluorocarbon for trout but I'm willing to be convinced otherwise if I will catch more fish.
