Eastern Sierra Fishing / Cottonwood Lakles
« on: September 08, 2016, 11:52:21 AM »
Anyone been to the Cottonwoods lately? We usually catch several 12-16" goldens in Lakes 4 and 5 but last fall we didn't see a sign of any fish in either lake. We caught a few small ones near the outlet of Lake 3 but something's "fishy".I heard awhile back that DFW was thinking about killing off the lakes to get rid of the hybreds and and re-introduce pure goldens but never heard anything more about it.

Breakfast at the Marine Room about 7:30AM. CBS TV was there and that night on the national news there's NJ and me sitting at the table. Too funny! Those windows were knocked out in the 80's and the place flooded but this time only small leaks at a couple of the windows. Turn up the volume.

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / Late Report, June 17-21

Met MJ in Leevining on the 17th and went up to Spillway Lake on Thursday. Fishing was fun, caught 50 or so on a red tail black gnat (wet). Mostly 10-12", probably 60/40 brooks vs brown. Mj used an assortment of dry and wet flies and caught a lot more small browns out of the inlet stream. Friday went up to Gardisky Lake. I swore I'd never go up that trail again but decided to show Mike the lake and check out the fishing, Got a lot of brooks but again nothing over 12". Friday afternoon went down to Lone Pine for the night and then up to Onion Valley and Big Pothole Lake Saturday. I had heard there were lots of big brooks in there to be caught on lures. I heard wrong about the big part. I knew the lake was surrounded by a boulder field but it was a lot worse than I thought. After the 4+ mile hike with elevation gain of about 2300', this old geezer abandoned ship and went back down to Gilbert Lake. Mike took on the boulders and caught a lot of fish but all really small. Looked like the lake is over populated for the amount of food available. I fiddled around Gilbert for about 3 hours waiting for MJ to get down. Got a lot of small brooks on fly/bubble while dodging a few rain showers.

A few pics follow:

Had planned to add a short report from a trip up LLV on Monday after the Club but couldn't retrieve pics from phone. Any way, had a good hike  and got a few nice fish from an un named lake.

Got back yesterday from a few days visiting in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and saw a lot of water. Too bad we can't truck the excess to California. Pretty sad situation in some areas. I guess there's still a few people missing because of the flooding.

Drove up to Bridgeport last Tuesday for a 3 day fishing trip in uncertain weather. Actually lucked out, stayed fairly dry. Wednesday we went to Roosevelt Lake for those early season Cutts. Lots of fish 14' to 18" on wet flies. The larger fish were beautiful red but no one got any decent pics. MJ got one shot of a smaller one shown later.

Roosevelt Lake

Thursday headed up to the lake noted for the real big Cutts. Had some snow flurries but not too bad. The lake was really low. There were 3 float tubes and 3 of us on shore and no one had a strike in the first two hours. All using various flies. MJ was in waders and said there were huge brooks and Cutts swimming around him with no interest in anything he tossed at them. I was getting ready to leave and put a red mini jig on my bubble rig and thought  I had a hit on about the 4th cast. No more action but as I left I gave MJ a jig to tie on his fly rod. About 5 minutes later I heard a shout and he got this monster on the jig. That was it and then it started to snow pretty hard.

Drove down to Mammoth that afternoon in snow showers. CHP was turning the Chains Required sign on Conway Summit as we went by. Friday we went up the Duck Pass trail as far as Skelton Lake. Snow on the trail was untracked and was about 6" deep in most areas. It was a lot of work getting to Skelton. All very small brooks on very small flies.

On down to Lone Pine Friday night. A good steak at Season's and home Saturday.

Anything Goes / Thar She Blows- Part 2
« on: February 27, 2015, 02:22:57 PM »
The whale trip to the Baja Lagoons was awesome. There is no way to describe the emotion when one of those big hummers comes up and bumps your boat and blows spray all over you. Unbelievable!
The trip was 1200 miles round trip, 6 days, 5 nights. Spent about 8 hours over 2 days on Scammons Lagoon and 2 hours 1 day on San Ignacio Lagoon. These are grey whales with the bigger females about 45 ft long and up to 25 tons. Touching or petting the babies is probably the highlight. Some of the ladies leaned out of the boats and kissed them- that was not my goal!

A little different trip coming this Friday to next Wednesday. Going with a group by bus to the whale lagoons in southern Baja. Go out in Pangas and pet whales, etc. Assuming the Bandidos don't hi-jack the bus and we don't get eating by a whale, I should have a few pics to post next week.

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / Silver Lake Trip 6/18-6/23
« on: June 27, 2014, 11:53:30 AM »
Nice ,friendly resort. Fishing not outstanding but caught a few small ones form a rental boat and our inflatable kayaks. Biggest problem was getting blown off the lake every day about 11AM by wind. Once the wind came up, it didn't let up till after dark which eliminated evening shore fishing.
I got up to Gaylor Lakes on Saturday for a lot of brooks but nothing over 10". Had the most fun at the upper lake where it was a fish on almost every cast on the same fly. Still some snow around the lake and some soggy shoreline. Had to cancel a trip to Walker Lake because of a stomach problem so didn't check the water level for Saudust. Did get a pic of the inlet end of Grant Lake. Man is it low for this time of year. Stopped off at Arrowhead Lake on Monday for lunch and a few more small brooks and a lot of people. It's definitely Summer time! It was a good relaxing trip even though fishing wasn't the best. A few Pics follow:
