Eastern Sierra Forum / Last trip of the season
« on: September 26, 2017, 07:51:14 AM »
Got to French Camp last Wednesday, first thing I noticed was the fishing hole next to the DWP gauge across from site 67 was completely filled with rocks and boulders about 4 feet deep.. That large pool had been there forever but sadly the runoff completely filled it with a massive amount of large rocks..Another nice fishing hole across from sites 72-73 had a tree fall into the creek and it was also filled with rocks.

Wednesday night the wind roared down the canyon  50-60 MPH until about 3 in the morning, needless to say I did not sleep at all...It was cold on Thursday and Friday, night temps in the 20's and high 40's low 50's during the day....Fished the Lower Owens on Thursday and Friday but only caught 4,,, river is still running high over 400 CFS.

Fished the Upper Owens on Sat/Sun. weather was cool and thankfully no wind.....Fishing was fantastic both days as I stopped counting fish at 60...Every fish I caught was 13-17 inches...I actually brought home my limit of 10 fish as I promised a neighbor I would bring them some trout home.

I was surprised the amount of campers on Wed, Thur and Friday there were about 20 in the campground. I wasn't able to get my favorite site  #66 and this was the first trip ever I had to camp in a non creek side site,,,had site 60 at the top of the loop which was OK....had no one even close to me.

On another fishing site 2 people that had reservations for Convict lake and Tuff campground were advised their reservations were cancelled due to weather..
They were planning on the first week of May.....Seems a little early to think about cancelling reservations when we have no idea how the weather will two months down the road.

Eastern Sierra Fishing / Blake Jones tournamment cancelled
« on: February 28, 2017, 04:21:29 PM »
City of Bishop has canceled the 50th Blake Jones fishing tournament.. DWP has withdrawn their permission to use PVR due to dangerous conditions in the reservoir and the Owens River.  Lot of people are upset as they have already paid entry fees and made motel reservations... One person on another site said he heard the water at PVR is high as the road.

Eastern Sierra Fishing / a week at the creek
« on: May 07, 2016, 07:20:38 AM »
Arrived in French Camp about 1030 on the 26th, first one in the campground..Set up camp, collected enough pine cones for a week.. stayed in camp for the day and finished reading a book..

Wed. 4/27.  Fished the Lower Owens for about 5 hours and only caught 4 stockers. Weather in Rock Creek was a tad nippy.

Thur.4/28.   Fished the Lower Owens for 6 hours and the wind was howling but I did manage to catch to catch 5 good size trout 16-18 inches in the river south of line were released. Creek in campground was stocked but half the amount of last year and not nearly as big...Weather was cold with a few snow flakes and sleet.

Fri. 4/29  Spent most of the day shooting off the Owens River road, fired about 700 rounds...came back to camp and cleaned my 5 handguns..Campground is filling up with campers.. Friday was beautiful weather but forecast is for crappy weather for the opener..cold and the dreaded wind.

Sat.4/30. Its cold and windy. On the Upper Owens by 0700..27 degrees, 30 mph winds and snow falling. maybe 35-40 fishermen from the monument down to the lake...Catch one 17 inch Cutthroat at 0830 with a lure and never had a bite after that no matter what I used..Never even saw one fish in the river. Everyone I talked to was getting skunked and not even having any bites. Only saw 2 guys with one fish each.  Back at the campground and almost all the planted fish had been caught by the hordes of fishermen that morning.

Sun. 5/1 Again fished the Owens for almost 6 hours and never had one bite, everyone I talked with had the same story... no bites no fish.

Yogi bear came into site by me Friday night and got into the cooler the camper left on his table..Told him to put the GD thing in his bear box but he didn't and Yogi came back in the morning and ate the food he had replaced from the first time... I told him he needs a expensive ticket from the Forest Service for leaving food out...  Yogi was also in the campground on Saturday night about 2100 hours.. These people that leave their food out need to stay home.....

Monday 5/2 On the way home fished south of line Street and caught 6 really nice trout, all 16-18 inches long..Kept 3 and the only ones I kept for the trip.

Watched the ice fishermen at the lake on Sunday afternoon for about a hour..never saw one fish caught and 6 guys I talked with said they fished for 5 hours and never had a bite...

Campground host mentioned that last season the creek was only stocked once a month and was not stocked at all in Sept. and October.  Sure would like to know where our License money is going since it sure isn't for fish stocking..

This was the third straight opener with cold weather and lousy fishing on the Upper Owens.. I must say the fishing in the river has really gone down in the last 5-6 years... From people I talked with that fished from June Lake South the opener was not very good as far as catching fish..

Anything Goes / February forecast for Los Angeles
« on: January 22, 2016, 09:31:52 AM »
Attached is the February weather forecast for LA...As you can see there really is no rain predicted until the end of the month..From what I have read the jet stream is pushing storms north...If this forecast is accurate then we better hope there is a March and April onslaught of storms.

Anything Goes / Starting to doubt El Nino
« on: January 18, 2016, 07:52:35 AM »
I'm beginning to doubt if were going to get the massive rain that has been predicted...I looked at a weather site for my area and it only indicates a few days of light rain all the way until March 1st.  In 1998 it started raining in January and it seemed it rained every week until April....Granted the Sierras are getting a lot of snow but So. Calif. so far is not getting the amount of rain expected and the February forecast does not look promising...

Eastern Sierra Fishing / 2015 opener report
« on: April 28, 2015, 07:32:42 AM »
Left last Tuesday morning,, no traffic at all on 395, arrive at French Camp and its closed, water hadn't been tested yet and Host won't let me in so its 65.00 dollar motel in Bishop. Fished the Lower Owens for a few hours and catch 2 stockers..
Wednesday in French Camp at 0730, set up camp, collect pine cones....Creek was stocked with at least 200 plus fish all in the 1 to 1 1/2 pound range with a few 2 pounds plus...was really surprised at the number and size that were stocked..  Fished the Upper Owens with barbless lures for about 2 hours and caught nothing.. River was running high and dirty as DWP raised the flow rate 2 weeks ago.  Rain started about 1800 and had a light rain for about 4 hours.

Fished the Lower Owens in Bishop on Thursday for about 6 hours and got skunked,,, never had one bite. I fished 6 different areas. water was also dirty in color..

Friday, weather was cool and spent the day shooting and not liking the weather forcast for Saturday which called for cold, snow and wind...

Opening day, 0600 snow is starting to fall in campground, creek where they stock it is packed and fishermen are pulling out fish every 5 seconds.. Its like shooting ducks in a pond. Guys are catching their limits in less than 10 minutes....By 0700 snow is coming down hard and sticking to the ground...It snows for about 4 hours and the campground had about 3 inches of snow. I go to the Upper Owens about 1230, its about 35 degrees and windy...Fish for about 3 1/2 hours and was able to catch 2 cutthroats one 17 inches, the other 19 inches, both weighed about 2 /12 to 3 pounds.. Never had a single bite other than the two I caught. Very few people on the river and I talked to 6 fishermen and only one had caught a fish, no one was even getting a bite.. Went back and fished Rock Creek at the bottom of the campground and caught 3, each about 1 1/2 pound stockers released all of them..

Sunday I fished the Upper Owens from 0830 until 1500 and never had one stinking bite no matter what I used. I only saw one person catch a fish on a worm..Every person I talked to said the same thing....Never had one single bite.  Fishing was horrible on the river for opening weekend.

The weather for the 6 days was not the best, but the little rain and snow was much needed. Crowds were very light, many vacant sites in French Camp. Spoke to 2 guys that were upset as the weather on Crowley was too windy to take their small boats out on.

I personally liked the cooler weather and enjoyed the short snowfall on Saturday but the fishing was terrible...I still predict that the fishing is going to be poor for this season...

Eastern Sierra Fishing / Opener 2015
« on: April 27, 2015, 04:52:52 PM »
Will post a more detailed report tomorrow as I just got home a few hours ago....In short, rain, hail, sleet, snow, wind,,,, did I say wind.....Fishing was slow and crowds were very light.... French Camp had about 25-30 vacant sites for the weekend...

Eastern Sierra Forum / Cashed my cans in yesterday
« on: April 15, 2015, 07:50:40 AM »
Loaded up my vehicle with 6 months of crushed cans and took them to the recycling center and cashed them in for 2.12 a pound....Made enough to pay for all my camping fees for the entire season.

Eastern Sierra Forum / I'm ready for opening day
« on: April 07, 2015, 07:36:30 AM »
Spent the day yesterday getting all my camping and fishing gear ready for the most important day of the year...Put up my tent and cleaned the dirt out of it. Put new line on my fishing reels, cleaned and oiled them. Restocked my box of camp cookware. Cleaned the Coleman stove and small BBQ. Bought more propane bottles.

Went to Bass Pro Shops and spent about 120.00 bucks using the gift cards I have and still have 150.00 dollars left on the gift cards.

Today I'm going to spend most of the day reloading bullets, going to reload 1000 rounds of 9mm and 1000 rounds each of .38 and .357...

Sunday I went to a new home const. site near me and collected a bunch of firewood, made 4 separate trips and stacked all the wood....

Leaving on the 22nd and as usual I know I will be the first one in the campground in French Camp... Will spend one week for the first trip of the season...

Eastern Sierra Forum / Illegal pot farms in Calif..
« on: April 01, 2015, 03:43:28 PM »
Heard a interesting item on talk radio today about all the pot farms illegally growing in this state. They said the growers use 23% of the natural water from the creeks and streams that they tap into to water their marijuana... I know Inyo and Mono County have had some huge illegal grow sites the last few years where the have stolen our precious water from the creeks to water their crops to keep the pot heads happy... The largest crop ever in Calif. was about 5-6 years ago where the were growing 250,000 plants and stealing water from Georges Creek..

Eastern Sierra Forum / Horrible news for 2015 fish stocking...
« on: February 10, 2015, 02:53:18 PM »
Read this article in the Sierra Wave,,,,40 percent reduction in fish stocking for 2015....Last year was pretty bad for fishing and the size of the stocked fish was the smallest I have seen in many years.
