Eastern Sierra Forum / Miracle
« on: March 22, 2018, 07:46:01 AM »
I am a relative Newbie to the ES. Only making trips up there for past 9 years. I have often heard the term "March Miracle"........are we witnessing one? I saw a ton of pics of Mammoth over Christmas and there was zero snow except for on the runs. I also read that the snow-pack was less than 5%.........Things changed since the Calendar went to March that's for sure and it looks like a dump-fest has been happening ever since!

Hope you all are surviving the winter blues........ :cold:

This was my first opener........I dont think Ill be back for another one. The crowds are brutal........If it was a longstanding tradition I would definitely keep going just for the experience, but i think I will do my early trip the week or 2 after. Saturday for us we fished all the lakes and creeks in June Loop and caught 1 fish. Weather was cold and snowy but no wind. Sunday we fished Convict had had a good day with easy limits. But we had to work for it.......pretty much all sight fish in the shallows using mini jigs. Shore fisherman using powerbait and such did not do much.

I think the road is fine all the way to the lake but I doubt EF will be open in a couple weeks. I always assumed they opened up right near the end of May before the Holiday.

As BJ said, full bobber with a mini jig or trout worm. Once I started using and figuring this method out, I have never looked back.

Also, if you are on Facebook, look up and follow Rock Creek Canyon Campgrounds......they just posted cool pics of the new road and pics from yesterday....little bit of snow but looks AWESOME

French Camp would be a safe bet I imagine........I know we have a guy on the board en route as I type this who stays there every opener. The weather reports for the weekend are changing....was looking good, but now maybe a lil rain on Sat.......be prepared. This is my "go to" weather guy for up there and he is releasing a detailed opener weather report this afternoon.

Just go for it......life is all about the adventure. The lake was stocked yesterday too! C'MON FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks bendingi on the updates!  Your updates allowed me to sneak in a couple of times this season and miss the traffic problems others have experienced.  Itís a big help when you know there work times and schedule.
 :thanks:

Ditto - Your updates were awesome and saved me some times on my trips up there.........Greatly appreciated!

The LLV trail is perfect for kids......last year my 3.5 year old and my 5 year old hiked all the way to Heart Lake and back by themselves. We fished a lil but wont bring our rods next time. The kids had way more fun fishing the creek in our campground and at the inlet at the lake. That Canyon is special. I am a relative Newbie only been going past 4 years, but try and go 2-3 trips a year. Started when my boys were 2.5 and 1.5 years old. They love it.

When will you be up there?

So I guess I should plan a few extra early season trips in this year...........our annual Fall trips might not even see the creeks fishable/stockable I would imagine.

Will be interesting  :fishing3:

Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / Just a little late

I am sure I am not the only one with cabin fever and itching for the 2014 season to get underway. Since the board is sooooo slow with inactivity I thought I would post a report that I meant to post back in August.........never got around to it....maybe it had something to do with having four kids 4 yrs old and under and being busy doesnt even begin to describe my life these days =)  ......so here it goes!

Spent 5 days at East Fork (sites 112-114) the third week in August with my two oldest boys Caleb and Micah (4 and 3yrs old) and a few other family members. It was an awesome time...... perfect weather, fish in the creek and the lake, diminishing crowds, and killer pie. Here are some pics......enjoy!

Always do a roadside outbound pic .....somewhere near Big Pine

Our favorite site.....creekside

Our loaded pool 20 feet from tent......kids looped the trout in there

Caleb and Micah at Heart Lake

Mr. Micah......coolest lil hiker I've ever seen =)

Swedish Candle........perfect cooktop

This was heaven.......kids played in the inlet.....grown ups fished around the corner...........perfect!

The catch

The view I think about almost everyday

Sorry for the tardy report....hopefully it got your adrenalin  flowing for the upcoming season.......First trip for 2014 is planned for Mid May.........Kids ask about it weekly......WE CANNOT WAIT!!!!! Thanks to all your contributions......been lurking around and very lightly contributing for past 4 years........wealth of knowledge to learn on here......hope to cross paths with some of you one day up there....

The story of the Aquaduct has always fascinated me.......As a Geology major we did a lot of week  long field studies up there and my professor was passionate about the story and got me interested in it. I bore my kids and friends as we drive up 395 retelling the history.........It is/was an amazing engineering feat........one of the marvels of the modern world.......Basically is sucks for the Valley, but obviosly great for the LA Basin.......a Necessary evil for the population of greater LA.

To quote Yogi, "this is like Deja Vu all over again"........I am a new Sierra lover. Many of you know I have been a saltwater captain on Sportfishing boats in Southern California for over 20 years now......We had a similar fight the past 8 years with what the Government called the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) which sought to make "reserves" and "underwater parks" all over the California Coast, making fishing illegal in those areas. The science behind their proposals was nothing short of lunacy........after long brutal going back and forths the sportfishing community lost as reserves were established all up and down the coast.

During the legal battles I started a family and had 4 kids......I wanted to pass down the love I had for fishing to them and honestly started going to the Sierra's due to the fact that the ocean was being shut down. It didnt take me long to fall in love with the East Side and so looked forward to raising my kids up there.......Now that this crap has followed me up to the mountains makes me sick to my stomach.

There is a MACHINE behind this........once the ball gets rolling it is hard to stop. In looking back at what we went through with the MLPA's.......the comments and task force meetings DID make a difference. When Creekdude posted the map of the proposed area it reminded me how much we actually DID accomplish with our fight. The original maps that the MACHINE propsed where massive. Through lawsuits and negotiations, it really was not as bad as it could have been.

So there is hope - it is not an easy fight - but we all must do something.
