I'll second Coldwater CG for its location and as a trailhead for some fabulous hikes to lakes and Duk Pass.

Thanks Scout. Stay safe out there.

I drove down that way, the road is still closed at the McGee Creek intersection. Tons of Edison trucks and crews down there, repairing the power poles the avalanche took out. I drove on 395 toward Mammoth, the berms on the sides of the highway are so high, I couldn't tell where the slide went.
So, I stopped in Crowley store and asked the owner what he knew. The house that was hit is the first house on the right as you're driving north on Crowley Lake drive, just as you get into what they call Long Valley. The newest house down there, built within the last 5 yeas or so, you could see it from 395, a two story , dark brown house. While I was in the store, somebody from down there called to order 10 pizzas, so they must have a lot of people helping them dig out.
Another interesting piece of local history....when I was a kid, my grandmother told me a story about the couple who built a restaurant down there in the late 30"s. Nan and Max Zischank were building the Long Valley Resort, Packer might remember it, it was still operating into the late 60's...we used to eat there occasionally. Anyway, g"ma told me that she went down to tell Nan and Max that they were building in an avalanche zone (she'd been here for years, and knew the danger areas), maybe they should pick a different spot. They kind of pooh-poohed her information, built anyway, and it's been avalanched a few times since. Some people just won't listen....

When I heard about sandbags in Mammoth, I thought about the Walker flood. I had to go the long way to get to Rock Creek that year from Reno, as the road was still washed out in May. Water is powerful....

Doesn't seem to be related to the petroglyphs stolen from BLM land.

How long are you going to be up there Ms. Beldingi?

Just until the 27th. A quick 'emergency' trip.

At the Lower Horse Corral today, within a 90 minute period we watched a weasel bound around the meadow, a bear amble through the woods, and a bald eagle fly up the creek. It's great to be back!

Update from USFS:
There have been issues with the asphalt plant so paving is behind schedule.

The contractor will be working Saturday August 15th on paving, so traffic delays will be in place.

They hope to complete the main road by the end of Sat and will have to work on pullouts and aprons next week.

They will also start working on raising manholes to grade, shoulder work, paved ditches, catch basins, signs and snow poles.

Construction update from USFS, July 29:
Next week paving starts on the lower 3 miles including all of the  bridge approaches.  The contractor will commence August 5th. They will be working from 6 am until 6:30 PM.  They will be working on Saturday the 8th and 15th  as well. They hope to complete paving by Saturday the 15th. If they do not they will continue the week of Monday the 17th but the schedule will be 7 am to 6:30 PM.

Re: completion date of the project. They have until mid-October to complete the project.  It appears they are running 2-3 weeks behind their original schedule so they may not complete the project until October.

From USFS: No more 4-hour delays. Apparently this afternoon's was cancelled, too.

More from Mono Co: The bridge work on Rock Creek Road was completed this morning.  Unfortunately, the lightning moved in and prevented the contractor from safely breaking down the crane and reopening the road at 12:00 as scheduled.  However, as of 2:00 the road was back open and traffic is restored.  The contractor will resume 30 minute maximum construction delays until the project is complete.

(Completion date is as late as end of September.)

All I know is that we noticed no differences in the bridges from 7 am to 12:30 pm. Not sure what was done during the first 4-hour closure except moving one big piece of equipment (the staging was supposed to happen yesterday). As always, will let you know what USFS tells me!
