I have two Slumberjack bags,, one is rated at minus 20 and the other 0 degrees....both are large bags and give me plenty of room as all my trips are tent camping only. They were not cheap sleeping bags and have lasted me for many years.

The fire was stopped at Hwy 6 so the railroad museum is fine

Someone on another board was at PVR campground and said a camper exploded, whatever that means..Wondering if a propane tank exploded and started the fire....Folks said the wind was blowing about 60 mph...Can assume it burned a lot of vegetation along the river.

Eastern Sierra Forum / Last trip of the season
« on: September 26, 2017, 07:51:14 AM »
Got to French Camp last Wednesday, first thing I noticed was the fishing hole next to the DWP gauge across from site 67 was completely filled with rocks and boulders about 4 feet deep.. That large pool had been there forever but sadly the runoff completely filled it with a massive amount of large rocks..Another nice fishing hole across from sites 72-73 had a tree fall into the creek and it was also filled with rocks.

Wednesday night the wind roared down the canyon  50-60 MPH until about 3 in the morning, needless to say I did not sleep at all...It was cold on Thursday and Friday, night temps in the 20's and high 40's low 50's during the day....Fished the Lower Owens on Thursday and Friday but only caught 4,,, river is still running high over 400 CFS.

Fished the Upper Owens on Sat/Sun. weather was cool and thankfully no wind.....Fishing was fantastic both days as I stopped counting fish at 60...Every fish I caught was 13-17 inches...I actually brought home my limit of 10 fish as I promised a neighbor I would bring them some trout home.

I was surprised the amount of campers on Wed, Thur and Friday there were about 20 in the campground. I wasn't able to get my favorite site  #66 and this was the first trip ever I had to camp in a non creek side site,,,had site 60 at the top of the loop which was OK....had no one even close to me.

I know French  Camp always closes on Oct.31...I always take my last trip in October and I can always count the campers in French Camp on one hand..

Anything Goes / Re: Good Shooting Areas?

That is why I like my shooting area off the Owens River Road...It has very high raised dirt banks with no vegetation at all on the banks which could be a fire hazard....It might be a a distance to drive but I don't care....Its too much of a fire hazard if you are shooting in areas where there is dry vegetation.

Eastern Sierra Forum / Senior pass prices going up
« on: July 21, 2017, 06:19:14 AM »
I posted this info on another site, the price for the senior pass for those 62 or older is having a huge price increase from 10.00 to 80.00 next month.. If your old enough you had better get it now.

The only place I shoot is where John posted the photo...There is no hazard for anything in that area and in all the times I have shot there I have never seen another person.. Shooting into those high dirt banks eliminates any danger of a fire hazard...  If you do shoot there please remember to pick up your empty casings...

I just sent a PM to Kevin, the manager for all the campgrounds as he is the only person with reliable info as to whats open...  I don't trust reserve America at all or any other site  The only good info would be from Kevin as he is the one that decides when to open or close a campground

Eastern Sierra Forum / Re: Rock Creek Lake Thawed?

When I was up there a few weeks ago, the creek was not running hard and fast thru Tuff like it was along Rock Creek road. I don't know if there is maybe some diversion that doesn't allow all the water from Rock Creek to run thru Tuff, but Tuff was not roaring fast water at all...

In Iris Meadow sites 1-8 are pretty much tent sites have never seen a rv or trailer in those sites..9-14 are in the open meadow area and have no trees in the site but they can handle large trailers or rv's....Personally I think those sites are terrible as you have no privacy from the folks on either side of you.

Tuff has very few trees so not much shade in the campground...I personally like the creek side sites in French, close to the creek and you don't have any campers on the other side of the road like you have on the main road entering the campground... The upper sites have less traffic as people use the cross overs to exit the campground..

Can't ever recall that much water running thru that creek...I wanted to fish there on my trip 2 weeks ago but I had a terrible back ache and there was no way I could walk the distance...

I was up there for 5 days May 9-14 and the fishing was downright slow..Rock creek was fast roaring white water, Upper Owens was downright horrible. 10 hours of fishing the river and I caught one fish and never had one bite after that...

You have French at the bottom of the hill with 84 sites, 20 of them are creek side...Iris and big meadow half way up the road...

If you have never stayed at the campground at the lake you should know it gets a lot of vehicle traffic...I compare it to camping on the San Diego freeway. There are many other campgrounds in Rock Creek that would have much less traffic..  I was up there last week and there is still a lot of snow in the campground and its a gamble if it would be open....I know the campground host for that campground are currently working at French Camp.
