They did not evacuate the campgrounds yesterday. Still evaluating the situation. The concerns are not only the amount of water that would be released if the dam breaks but also the large logs that come down the creek. I should have more information later today. Still hoping to go!

I was planning on leaving for the creek at the crack of dawn tomorrow and was almost all packed up when I got a call from a friend who is already up there.  Bottom line: she told me not to come tomorrow. Above Iris Meadows there is a waterfall area in the creek, and above that there is a large, old beaver dam. The dam is currently holding back a large amount of water and there is concern that the dam may break, which would then flood the campgrounds. There have been many people out along the creek assessing the dam and the flood threat. A decision was to be made by late afternoon whether and when to evacuate (including camp hosts).

Week at the creek
on: September 16, 2013, 06:45:02 AM
Sadly I had to come home after spending  a week Camping/fishing. Stayed in Iris Meadow and pretty much had the place to myself. There was never more than 4 other campers and sites 3 and 4 have been closed off by the Forest Service due to erosion problems.. The road in the campground was re graveled and packed down which made it very nice to drive on...Restrooms are still closed and the Forest Service is suing the contractor that built them..

Say it isn't so! Sites 3 and 4 CLOSED?????? What about 5 and 6?
And what's going on with the bathrooms? The "fix" of late summer didn't fix the problem? Are all the bathrooms closed at all the campgrounds?

Are all sites at Big open? bathrooms?

Retired: what are the sites you prefer at French?

Just got this info  in an email: comment period extended. This proposal affects Rock Creek as well as Bishops Canyon....tried to put this on Rock Creek, E. Sierra FB page but couldn't get a status prompt to post (may be because I'm on iPad). Please repost wherever...

Yellow Legged Frog Update

The comment period for the US Fish & Wildlife proposal to list the frog and establish critical habitat in the Eastern Sierra has been extended to November. Thank you for everyone who commented. For those that have not yet commented, please visit the following links for resources regarding the proposal. We are also asking that folks please submit comments via the links below requesting the following.
The proposal should not be approved unless verbiage in the proposal guarantees that public access will not be impeded in any way.
The critical habitat area should be moved back to the existing wilderness boundary which would exclude South Lake, Upper So. Fork Bishop Creek, Weir Pond, upper Rock Creek and Rock Creek Lake to insure the viability of area businesses and access for recreation including hiking, fishing, boating and kayaking.
The California DFW should be the lead agency managing the frog population.

Heard a report yesterday that there was a lot of smoke in Mammoth area yesterday. There is a fire in the Mammoth pools area but I also heard that there were several fires. What is the air quality like along Rock Creek? Is there smoke from the fire? Planning on heading up next week but don't want to camp in smoke....coming for clear blue skies and clean air!

Any word on when they're going to start the repaving project up the canyon? I noticed surveying going on several weeks ago when I was there. That's going to be a pain and a "quiet solitude" spoiler.

The numbers on the Iris Meadow map are not correct. Site #1 is right but then the numbers 2, 3, 4, 5 go sequentially down the creek side with 6 being at the end, and 7, 8 on the road side. Manager site must be 9.  :-)

Eastern Sierra Forum / East Fork question
« on: June 18, 2012, 05:08:53 PM »
I am lamenting the fact that Iris Meadow isn't open yet (and latest word is "July 4th???" -- why did they wait so long???) and I have a trip planned (and meeting 2 other folks) later this week. So I'm trying to come up with a plan B and C and.........

How much of East Fork is first come-first served? Are there any non-reservable sites by the creek? I know so many of you love, love, love EF but I am an Iris girl! Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks for that info! I had heard of this restroom project last summer but when I asked a while ago, nobody had heard that it was going on, let alone its status. Let's hope it doesn't go further into June...I've already planned my first trip to Iris for mid-month.
