Eastern Sierra Trip Reports / Quick Trip
« Last post by Packer on October 08, 2017, 07:08:31 PM »
Made a quick trip from Wednesday until Sunday, not the usual two weeks we love. Also.....because RC was closed for reservations and we hate going up to be shut out of good spots, we reserved and went to Twin Lakes.

Just got home and while it was the Sierras, just feel short handed as we were not at the creek!

Will post more with pics later, time to unpack and ready for the daily work grind tomorrow.

Weather was windy and cold 10/2 thru 10/4. Saw a few fish in Gilbert and Flower.  Definitely 4 season gear required, I was under geared for this trip. No place or time for lightweight tent and bag.
Interesting to meet many  PCT through hikers who come over KP to resupply. That is a  tough 16 might. R/T.

You're pictures are a highlight to me every time that you post. They give me the opportunity to see areas that I will never be able to see in person. Age, medical limitations, finances and time prevent me from making the trips that you do. How awesome is the beauty of God's creation, and your pictures bring it to all of us on the Board. Thanks

It’s so quiet here in Rock Creek's Message Board you can hear a pin drop!  Guess this topic is a bust.  It happens so I’ll just end this topic now.  I guess snow is boring!  Here is what you missed: :shoveling:

Some of the highlights were Tioga Pass (which I shared), high snow levels and the damage to the two resorts in the area.  Some of the higher lakes (over 11,000 ft.) were still partial frozen over in September, just incredible!   :yodel:

Mammoth Lakes won the prize for deepest snow; some of the drifts were over 35-40 feet high.  Took a hike over Duck Pass in spring, most of the lakes were frozen but fished for Rainbows in Duck Lake where there was open water.  Visited Mammoth both in winter and spring.

Also visited Rock Creek in last winter and this summer.  Cross-country skiing in winter and great fishing in summer.  Caught my first Cutthroat in the Rock Creek area.  I might just try for the “Sierra Grand Slam” (5 different species of trout), now that I know that’s its possible here.

Some of the other area’s I visited was Sonora Pass (lots of snow), Bridgeport Lakes (more snow), Lundy Canyon (went the back way to 20 lakes basin), June Lake Loop (Horsetail waterfall was incredible!) and down south to Big Pine Lakes (beautiful!).  Lots of gorgeous fish caught (most released) with a few trophy size.  This also makes for one of the shortest fishing seasons on record for me.  So with that last thought, I’m heading up there one more time before the upper lakes freeze on me.  Wish me luck………  :hiking2: :fishing3:

All roads and trails remain open.  Enjoy your day of fishing and hiking.  Fall colors are out and the fish are biting! :hiking2: :fishing3:

My brother and i are coming to Bishop tomorrow to fish.  We were planning to fish Rock Creek and some of the lakes: Heart, Marsh, etc.  Does this mean the road is closed to the last trailhead?  Thanks for any help.  First time in the area.
