Onion Valley - Smoke update and thoughts?
« on: September 16, 2015, 10:07:45 AM »
Does anyone know how the smoke is in the Onion Valley/Kearsarge Pass area right now? I was thinking about a quick weekend trip this weekend. I've camped there before but it has been years. I thought that by being a little further south it would save me some travel time up and back on such a quick trip. I then remembered that when I was in Rock Creek in late August that the smoke was really bad as I left RC and headed back down 395. I had one bad smoke day in Rock Creek Canyon, the rest were pretty good but as I left for home it was really thick as I went south. So bad I can't imagine hiking in it would be much fun or very healthy. I think it was from the Rough fire in Kings Canyon?

On another note, I was thinking of hiking and fishing Gilbert, Flower and then maybe heading over to Matlock lake. Has anyone fished those lakes? Matlock in particular?  looks a little more out of the way so I thought that might help to get off the main trail.
Appreciate any updates or thoughts.

Matlock, Slim and Bench Lakes are all dead now thanks to the "Frog".

Glad I asked before making the trek then. I was actually thinking of adding Slim in the trip as well if things went right.  I'll keep my thoughts on frogs to myself but thanks for the info.

We camped there Labor Day week.  The smoke was heavy and light.  It depended on the winds.  Some days it made us wonder if the fire was upon us.  I wouldn't want to hike in it at all.

The smoke has been pretty bad this season in Onion Valley, but has cleared up since the last storm went through.   But who knows what will happen this weekend, all depends on the wind direction.

Stick to Heart, Flower and Gilbert Lakes for best fishing on this side of the pass.  Over the pass try Frog lake, #4 Kearsarge lake and Charlotte lake for best fishing.
