Another look at Secret Lake - Hoover Wilderness

Lots of Crawdads in Secret and the other lakes in this area. Some folks cook and eat them. Not bad!

Did not see any this last trip but seen them before along the shore at Fremont Lake which is down the trail a bit from Roosevelt/Lane Lakes.  You can also catch some Crawdads in the June Lake Loop, Mini Lobsters as some call them! ;D

You can see where Emma Lake is located as it’s centered around mountains in a bowl.

About mid-July, this meadow turns into a blanket of flowers.  It’s really beautiful!  This hike was taken on June 2nd of this year, little early for many flowers to bloom.

Couldn’t take the normal trail to Emma Lake due to some high snow drifts over the outlet creek, where there were some serious snow caves over the creek, making for some hazardous crossing.  So I approached Emma Lake from the South-East.

Emma Lake holds Brook Trout, ranging from 6” to 12”.  Fishing was excellent as they tore at my wet fly on most casts on this picture perfect day!

Down the hill near Obsidian Campground, Little Walker River was running strong but dirty with the spring runoff.

There are two trailheads near Obsidian Campground.  There’s the Molybdenite Creek trail and Burt Canyon Trail.  You can take Molybdenite Creek Trail south into the Hoover Wilderness, or north along Wheeler Creek.  Burt Canyon Trail follows the Little Walker River up to Anna Lake.  Both Trailheads have parking that is near Obsidian Campground.

Green Creek Trail to the Hoover Wilderness

Just south of Bridgeport is the turnoff to Green Creek, a dirt road that heads off to the south from highway 395, and then climbs into the canyon along Green Creek to the southeast.  The road is signed and well graded the whole way.  Right before the campground at the end of the road is the Trailhead Parking Lot.  Here you’ll find an informational kiosk, bathroom, water, and a dumpster.
