Mystery Location
« on: May 30, 2012, 09:55:57 AM »
Can you guess where this picture was taken?

This was taken in late May 2011, one year ago with the massive snowfall we had last year.  This is in the Eastern Sierra and Iím sure most of you been here at this popular location, minus the snow.

Hint:  I had to walk 1Ĺ to 2 miles on snow shoes to get to this spot.  Snow was 15 to 20 feet deep where Iím standing.  Where Am I?

What's the five mile loop Hwy 395?

The picture does look familiar.  Lundy Lake?

"Popular location" in the Eastern Sierra with 15 to 20 feet of depth sounds like Mammoth area.  Hiking 1 1/2 to 2 miles is about Devil's Post Pile from a normal drive to spot, but the road is closed and you would have had to hike a ton more than that.   What confuses me is the lack of snow accumulation on the background slopes, let alone no clear identifying features I can make out.  Definitely upper elevation with a plowed road access to your departure point.

Hmmm...?????

Looks like it could be somewhere in Bishop Pass area, but it did not open up until late last year.  I think Saudust is on the right track with Mammoth Lakes area.  I'll try Lake Mary?  I'm I close?

Some good guesses, but not quite right.  There is a frozen lake in the picture.  I came back to this spot two days later and it dumped another 2-3 feet more snow.  I'll show that picture tomorrow and should clarify the location.

Still guessing. :lol2:    It it above 9,000 feet.  Not Fern Lake, Long Lake or Lundy Lake.  Gardisky Lake?  I'm not that crazy High Sierra.   :lol2:    Some of you are getting close!

Yeah, Gardisky Lake would be a crazy hike with 15-20 foot of deep show.  I know it's not Oneida Lake FlyGirl because it's a 4 mile hike in.  Has to be 2 miles or less hike I'm thinking!  Upper or Lower Twin Lakes in Bridgeport?

All good answers, but incorrect.  Will give a good hint tomorrow.

Clearer look at this mystery popular spot.  There are several hints in the picture.  Can you guess where it's at now?

Well, the picture is clearer, but now the frozen lake seems a lot smaller than I first thought!  West Lake in the Hoover Wilderness?  It's about a 2 mile hike .
