Lots of snow, part 2
« on: January 19, 2017, 08:01:52 AM »
Another foot of snow in Crowley this morning, at least it's powder this time, nice and light. We'll have lots of water this year....and mosquitoes.

I just heard from my local meteorologist, she says we can expect a few inches more between now and Saturday, then maybe another foot here Saturday night into Sunday. It'll be awhile before anybody can access the back country this season.
Went for a drive, Rock Creek Road was plowed a few days ago, now it's buried again. Looking toward Mammoth was a solid wall of white, cars stopped on 395, what a mess. Glad I can just sit here.

I've had enough. It snowed all day yesterday, all night last night, just got done digging out the wood pile for the umpteenth time. It's actually getting scary, I heard an avalanche took out a house in Long Valley last night. I don't think I've ever seen this much snow here, I've been in this house 23 years. We had to get between two or three feet in the last 24 hours...it's really not fun anymore.
I'll try to send some pics to Packer so he can post them for me.

oh my goodness Scout,, you made me laugh so hard!

while I am not dealing with snow.. I swear we are 2 inches below the snowline tho...  I have had enough as well.  we are measuring our rain in feet, not inches.. and the winds?  they sound like freight trains rolling thru.. then the house shakes....  then the lightening and thunder... and whenever there is a slight break in the rain...  the sound of chain saws out in the distance....

tomorrow 'they' have promised some sun... heck, I will be happy with a day of no rain...  but I am so hoping for some sun!

My rain gauges have now registered 16 1/2 inches of rain here in Upland since Dec. 1st...That is usually our average for the year...Right now at 2:10 pm the temp is 35..Can't ever remember a daytime temp that low at this time of day.

Here are a few pictures from Scout. This is at Hilton Creek area. Many reside there as it does not get the large dumps of snow that happen in Mammoth, but is right at the edge of paradise. Growing up my family had a cabin along with another family here. I had never seen it look like this in all my years there. Hope Maggie helps him dig out the wood pile!

Here's my Jeep this morning...it looked just like this a couple mornings ago. The hump behind the Jeep is my wood pile.

This is the road in front of my house, the walls are taller than I am.

Wow...hang in their Scout. We have been unable to get up to our cabin yet as the road was shut down when we came up to try.  I am sure it is under the snow by now, just hope it is still standing. I know there have been avalanches up above East Fork but don't know the damage.

Mammoth Snow Update-

Mammoth Mountain reports “the snowiest month ever on record” there, with still a week left in January. The latest storm brought 58 inches of fresh snow, sending the month’s total to 241 inches, shattering the total for the previous snowiest month – 209 inches in December 2010.

“We’re already three feet over that,” said Mammoth Mountain spokesman Tim LeRoy. “It’s a record breaker by a pretty wide margin.”

Mammoth is also boasting the deepest snow pack of any resort in North America, with 345 inches for the season. Records at the resort date back to the 1969-70 season.

More from Scout:
This is Crowley Lake Drive between Toms Place and Crowley Lake. Only about a lane and a half until the blower gets there.

For us old timers, this was the road from Toms Place until McGee Creek when it hooked back up to Hwy 395. The hill top before dropping down to Hilton Creek and Crowley lake was always a white knuckle stretch in snow and icy conditions!!

I always stay in French Camp for the opener but I have a gut feeling there may still be snow and the campground won't be open.. I think a lot of areas will be snowed in this year for the opener.

We need to remember this is only mid/late January. In the years past most of the issue was that February through April turned dry. Hoping that is not the case as we need more this season and repeat for a few years to come. If we do not get more of this, it will be melted away by April. Sorry Scout, but bring it on!! If I need to I will come up and help you  :wood:

Another from Scout. Thanks for giving us the Birds Eye View.  This is the view looking North/West from the top of the hill before it drops down to the Hilton Residential area and above Crowley Lake.

I just took this from the top of the ridge on Oha...did I ever tell you how it got it's name?...one version anyway...when they were building the road in 1931, everybody called the foreman of the project " old horse's ass"...oha.    Lots of snow out there.
