IMPORTANT: Possible Rock Creek canyon evacuation
« on: June 05, 2017, 05:16:38 PM »
I was planning on leaving for the creek at the crack of dawn tomorrow and was almost all packed up when I got a call from a friend who is already up there.  Bottom line: she told me not to come tomorrow. Above Iris Meadows there is a waterfall area in the creek, and above that there is a large, old beaver dam. The dam is currently holding back a large amount of water and there is concern that the dam may break, which would then flood the campgrounds. There have been many people out along the creek assessing the dam and the flood threat. A decision was to be made by late afternoon whether and when to evacuate (including camp hosts).

They did not evacuate the campgrounds yesterday. Still evaluating the situation. The concerns are not only the amount of water that would be released if the dam breaks but also the large logs that come down the creek. I should have more information later today. Still hoping to go!

Yes, please keep us informed Mimi.

I guess it's been longer ago than I thought since I've hiked that area. I don't recall seeing that old beaver dam. Thinking about it more, it's been 10 years or better.

I'm guessing it is the area about 1/8th mile below the Palisade Cabins. I fish the area a few times a year, and it is only spot that makes sense to me. It has been more of a muddy gooey meadow to the left of the creek as you go down. It is a large area, so if its filled up with water, would make quite a mess. Right below, the creek sides rise up in sort of a narrows effect so that would really make the water race down.

20 days until we head up. Starting to wonder how it will play out.......

I envisioned it would be in between Iris Meadow and Big Meadow Packer.

Of course Mimi is getting news 2nd or 3rd hand. Hmmmm.

Yeah Mimi said it was above Iris so it aint right below Palisade.  I haven't been through that area in many years but I do know it gets pretty thick in there so there could be some beaver dams many of us have never seen...
Once I arrive at Tom's Place...well,  you know...nothing else matters...

She said about Iris, but wonder if it also affected Big Meadow? Could be the area I am thinking of and it would affect both if it cut loose. Will have to trek that way in a few weeks to see what's goin on.

Could be some big hungry fish in that body of water!!

I talked with Jim King, from the Resort, yesterday, he had heard nothing official about this, only the rumors. I'm sure he would have been informed of any problems. Later in the afternoon, I ran into a Mono County Sheriff and asked him if he knew anything about it, he didn't. He said the Sheriff's Department would definitely know about  anything of that magnitude.
It will be a couple of days before I go up there, then I'll look around. I think I know where the dam(s) are, may be more than one. I'll see if I can find any USFS people that I can talk to.

I just got back from driving up the canyon, here's what I found out. I couldn't find any "authorities", meaning USFS people, but talked to people who are staying in Iris, and who did spend time with a USFS employee yesterday, at the site of the "problem". It is between Iris and Big Meadows, older beaver dam(s) from the mid 80's. I remember fishing in there years ago, pretty nice, Not a huge dam, by any means, and built from small aspens and willow, not big logs. As the runoff started in force, the water started backing up behind the dam, and some people got concerned. Within a few days, the current had found it's own way around the dam, started a new channel, problem solved.
Sometimes you can just leave it to Mother Nature.....
