The Matlock Lakes are fishless. It was gill netted several years ago. Gilbert lake seemed to have a little bit bigger Brookies but I much preferred fishing at Flower Lake. There is also a couple of very nice camp sites at FL. Be sure and take your winter gear because this late in the season makes it very possible to have some very cold nights. Little Pothole has really small Brookies because it gets hit pretty hard by the day hikers. I never fished Heart Lake or Big Pothole Lake but I think a couple of others on here have. The view from Kearsarge Pass is one of my favorites and you won't be disappointed. The fishing at Kearsarge Lakes can be off the hook for little brookies.

When I day hike in this area, I always check out the view first from Kearsarge Pass (wow) and then hike down and fish the lakes along the way.  All the lakes have Eastern Brook in them with Big Pothole Lake the biggest.  Heart Lake had some Rainbows in its waters.  There’s rumors there might be some Browns in Heart Lake, but I never seen or caught any.  Gary covered the other lakes in this area.

Weather was windy and cold 10/2 thru 10/4. Saw a few fish in Gilbert and Flower.  Definitely 4 season gear required, I was under geared for this trip. No place or time for lightweight tent and bag.
Interesting to meet many  PCT through hikers who come over KP to resupply. That is a  tough 16 might. R/T.

Did you make it up to Kearsarge Pass? If so what did you think?

Did not make it to KP.  Started too late in the morning.  Coming back over the rise from Matlock I could see the last switchback of KP.  A thin pale 45 degree line up populated with 6 little ants. 4 going up, 2 going down.  I was getting tired by that time and frankly it looked a little intimidating to me.  For me I need to start from Gilbert or Flower early in the morning.  I am a risk averse old goat and will get it done under the right conditions.  It was beautiful up there but the weather was spooky. lf
