Bear Boxes
« on: June 13, 2012, 08:54:38 PM »
I have kind of a funny question.  What are the dimensions of the bear boxes?  I have a large cooler and i am wondering if it is too big to fit in the box.  Any info would be great, thanks!   :thanks:

It'll fit...unless it's a super-sized marine cooler or something.  I have what I think is a pretty large cooler and it fits easily.  I'll try to find out though...

Hmmm...they do fit a couple of 40 or 50 quart coolers with room to spare...maybe you should contact the folks at the campgrounds,  rock creek campgrounds do have a facebook page,   I bet if you sent em that question they could measure a bear box and tell ya whatcha need to know if no time...

The ones at French Camp are almost big enough to sleep in.

If the cooler will fit in a car, it'll likely fit in the bear box, also.

I saw that tim shot off a message on facebook asking...  and I had the same question before i left, .. but it was about the height:).. i just measured what i had in mine,, and it came up to under 4 feet across... and i am not sure there was enough extra room there that a 4 foot long box would fit...   but i cant remember for sure.   if it fits, it will be tight for sure!

ok.. i just remeasured my stuff with a tape measure to be sure...   42 1/2 inches total across...(I had an ice chest, a box for food.. and a plastic bin for my cooking stuff..  sitting in there all lined up side by side )  and i did have some scooching room cause i remember moving my ice chest over so it would open,,,,  so you should be good!

Oakboy, you should be good. My Igloo is 42" including the handles and fits. Hope your cooler has wheels to get it from your vehicle to the bear box as those big ones are heavey when loaded. Have a good trip!

I'm late with this reply but here is what camp hosts were told about the extra large coolers.
If they don't fit in the bear box you can (now it will not keep the bear out)keep in the back of your truck, or under the table as long as its covered with a tarp or blanket(out of sight out of mind) by keeping it hidden you will not be cited by law enforcement.... that ticket is 600.00 to 700.00 dollars and as we all know state and local authorities are broke and need money.  I would get a smaller cooler
