RCL 6/13 - 6/20
« on: June 26, 2012, 12:18:25 PM »
Stopped in Lone Pine Tuesday night for a sunrise hike Wednesday morning down the lower Whitney trail from the Portal to the LP camground. Left LP and headed for Tom's Place for lunch. Got to the lake about 2PM and settled in for the week. Fishing from shore with waist waders was good at both ends of the lake with the usual assortment of stockers. Dark BH buggers worked best for me. Landed a few in the 2lb range but did break off one probably 4-5 lbs. That 2 lb test is risky for those big rascals.

Stopped off at one of my favorite spots (first pic) for the usual browns and to me the lake appeared fishless. Jim at the resort thought there were still fish in it but hasn't been there in a couple years. Maybe someone can verify if there are still fish there.

The next lake was very productive with 10 brooks 9-12". Had so much fun I went back the next the next day and caught nothing. The main problem was I left the fishing rod in the cabin. Oh well it's a nice hike.

NJ took the next 2 pics from the Ruby Lake trail. Look closely at the first one and you'll see some fool in a float tube on Mack Lake catching nothing. The day before the surface was alive with with risers but not so this day. The second pic is the standard view from about 3/4 miles up the trail.

Checked out of the cabin Wednesday morning and went over to Mammoth for a while before heading south. Hiked up to Arrowhead Lake for a couple hours. Caught a few little brookies but by 11 AM  the place was so crowded we went back down to car and ate lunch by Coldwater Creek. On the way out took a drive around Lake Mary and NJ caught this bird in the tree.

Had good weather for the most part except for some extreme winds on Sunday and Monday 80 mph over the ridges. Not good for kayaking (or anything else) on the lake.

Looks like a great trip BJ. I read a forum report somewhere (maybe here) that said there were no fish in the lake. I just assumed that meant they didn't catch anything but maybe they were right?

Nice trip Report!  I used to catch stunted browns in that lake, the head was half the size of the fish!  Was my go to lake when I was going for a Sierra Grand Slam!  Another lake lost for fishing.

Awesome trip! Love the pictures of the Bald Eagle. Looks like you had that lake to yourself. It looked like you were on Box Lake from the view off the Ruby trail? Great view either way.

Bob,

Was that fool in a float tube, actually in a blue kayak? Anyone you know?

Great report, I'm pretty sure I know those first two lakes.

Thanks for the report.

Paul

Paul. It was a float tube and I know the individual. A lot of effort for one strike!.

"Should have been here yesterday", huh, BJ?  Thanks for the pics and report.  Forgot your pole?  Sounds like something I'd do for sure.
Let me wake laughing from a nap in the afternoon under the aspens in the fall.
