Piute - Pine Creek Trip Report (Aug. 8 - 13)
« on: January 05, 2013, 08:00:13 PM »
Another outstanding trip as we backpacked from North Lake, over Piute Pass, up French Canyon and to Elba, Moon and Steelhead Lakes. We finished with a cross-country trek over Royce Pass, down to Honeymoon Lake, with a day hike to Granite Park.

Beautiful lakes throughout (though we didn't fish) with some of the best high country scenery of anywhere in the Sierras.

Glad we hiked down rather than up Pine Creek trail. On the other hand, for a short trip into the high country, Pine Creek Pass to Moon Lake or Granite Park would be near the top of my list.

Also loved the isolation of the area. Very few people once we left JMT.

Upper Golden Trout Lake, not long after we crossed Piute Pass:

Elba Lake near upper French Canyon:

Moon Lake, which offered the best campsites:

L Lake during an incredibly beautiful day hike:

Spectacular view towards Pine Creek and Royce Pass:

One of three lakes just south of Royce Pass:

Honeymoon Lake, where we camped for two nights:

Hiking into Granite Park:

Truly an amazing place:

Great report and pictures! The only thing missing are some fish pics to drool over. Thanks for posting.

Nice pictures and report. Thanks for sharing your trip. One doesn't have to fish to enjoy himself. Thanks again.

Nice trip report and pictures stormdude!  Piute Pass is my favorite route to Humphrey’s Basin and fishing heaven!  Are group took almost same trip a few years back but deviated once over Piute Pass with taking the spur trail to Desolation Lake (good fishing) and then cross-country over to Moon Lake, then up the Royce Lakes (great fishing!) over the pass to Honeymoon Lake then down to the Pine Creek Trailhead where we had a car waiting.

I believe that’s Granite Lakes (#1 is the largest one) that’s south of Royce Pass that was full of eager golden trout for us, but could be wrong.  Have to agree with you that is some of the best high country scenery in the Eastern Sierra.  Thanks for bringing back some great memories!

Done quite a few trips to French Canyon. Always started out from Pine Creek Pack Station. Love that area! Thanks for the report.

L Lake is also the most scenic. The view from the plateau above it is unbelievable. Here's the page from that day:

fishing does not have to be the point of a trip like that, but you were in Golden trot heaven. Dry fly's and the lightest rod possible, don't pack out without em. Drooling over your pictures again!

Beautiful pics of some great places. I agree with Sierraslam, I couldn't imagine it without my fishing gear. Thanks for sharing an incredible trip!

Great website Stormdude!  Loved the photos of Central Oklahoma EF-5 Tornado in 2011.  Wow! :rain:
