Got my firewood
« on: April 02, 2013, 06:34:06 AM »
I was driving by a const. site yesterday where a AM/PM mini mart was being built in the framing stage and considering I have used all my Rock Creek firewood up, I pulled in contacted the foreman and asked if I could have the discarded lumber... He said take all you want.. So I made 5 trips in my SUV loading up enough wood to maybe last the next 2-3 years...It a heck of lot cheaper than buying wood in the campgrounds...

LMAO - 5 trips and wood for two years.   Kind of relieves bagging pine cones, R96!  :campfire2:
Let me wake laughing from a nap in the afternoon under the aspens in the fall.

Pine is pine, whether it's got a little bark on it  or a lumber stamp.  No doubt it'll burn clean and hot!   Easy to stack, too.  :wood:    You won't be this guy.     :tree:  Or this one.   :lol2:

I still collect a ton of pine cones every trip as I use those for a quick morning fire as they burn fast, plus there good kindling for the evening fire....If I had to buy the packs of wood they sell up there I would probably spend darn near 75.00 bucks every trip... That money could be be better spent on beer and wine..

Wow thats awesome! I never would have thought of that. Do you know if that is a common thing for them to let you take the discards? Or were you just taking a shot in the dark by asking them?

I have been getting wood from const. sites for about 10 years. When they are framing they always have piles of small 2x4 and 2x6 which are perfect for a campfire..and I have never been refused permission to gather the wood. I'm going by the site to pick up more wood today.

I Love pine cones :camping:  The best ones are the small gold ones at French camp  :fire:  Last year I collected a bunch and brought them home to burn in my fire pit ... it's as close as I can get to the Sierra's in winter  2 months and counting

What retired says is true as my brother-in-laws is a contractor.  He has to pay somebody to clean out his site anyway so has no problem if somebody wants the extra wood pieces.  Just ask before loading your truck! :wood:

The absolute best pine cones for burning are the huge ones about a mile above the narrows.  There is an area to pull off just after the creek crosses the road and you can drive back in there and get all the pine cones you want.  Burn pine cones and use your firewood money for something better :pie2:

Because we need way too much for our longer stays and there is no room in the truck to pack wood along with the gear, we always go into Mammoth and pick up a cord of wood from GC Forest products.
It was Mammoth Firewood Company until a few years ago when Greg took it over. Super nice guys there and can't beat the price for wood. Works out to be about 1/3 the cost of wood if purchased from the campground.
Pack it in, Pack it out...or have a Wrangler do it for you.

I pack the wood I scrounged up by placing it flat on the floor of my SUV usually about 3 pieces high and use about half of the space of the cargo area... I then pack all my camping gear on top of the wood. Considering I only camp by myself I don't have to pack half the house like others do when they take the wife and kids..

I happened to drive by a street near my house where they are building 10 homes in the framing stage...Stopped and talk to the foreman, told him I wanted some of his scrap wood and he said take it all so I don't have to pay to have it hauled away... There was tons of wood, so today I will load up on more wood....My wife thinks I'm crazy bringing all that wood home..

Well said Packer! Too much firewood is like too much food, better to not run out. leave the  left over firewood for the next camper and hopefully he will do the same  :marshmallow:
