Rock Creek Road - Opening day?
« on: April 17, 2013, 01:31:23 PM »
Hello -

Anyone know if the road to Rock Creek Lake will be plowed a few days before opening day?  I am hoping to do some snow camping on the 25th and I am afraid the road will not be plowed until the 27th.  Any more info out there?

-Jon

What snow,, The road to the lake has been open for many years in my experience as I go up every opener,,,, but there is darn little snow anywhere up there....

All depends on the snow conditions but I believe this year there should not be a problem.  The campground at the Lake will still be closed...thus the gate entrance near the outlet will most likely be locked and you will need to park and hike in.  The gate to Mosquito Flats may or may not be open.  Depends on how the road survived the winter.  Since there was little snow, chances are good that most roads will be open.
The creek is waiting...

Road conditions, courtesy of Scout on 4/19:

The road up the Canyon is open to the Lake, that's as far as I drove, but I imagine they stopped plowing at the Pack Station. The Lake has a lot of open water already, so maybe you guys shouldn't plan on ice fishing this opener, it could be rather frightening. The camp people are working on Tuff Camp and French, I didn't see any activity above that. I couldn't drive down to the boat docks, but there was only one patch of snow that I didn't want to bother with, maybe it will melt in the next week. The boat dock cove is pretty much ice free, the sand beach to the west is open. Open water up by the inlet, some open water in Rainbow Bay.

Considering the lousy and rather warm winter I figured that that the lake would not be a prime ice fishing spot this year...Anyone that might attempt to go on the ice might be putting their life in danger.

Wow! RCL rarely has much open water on Memorial day. Can't imagine what it's going to be like in September.

Sunrise last year on May 13th

about 1/2 hour later

the results after about an hour. Made it home just in time to go out to dinner with the wife.

It sounds like this year is going to be alot like last year.

Looks like another May trip is in order.

Earlier rather than later this year if you want to fish the creeks for sure. I've seen the lake frozen solid, and no snow on the shore. Never seen RCL and Lake Mary in Mammoth ice free for Opener. I guess now we have.

Here's a pic of the lake as of today...AMAZING the amount of open water and how thin the ice is.  I bet the lake is 60% thawed or more for the opener...

Anybody planning on ice fishing will have to fish from shore in the open water...You have to be a fool to try and walk on that thin ice

7 hours and I'm gone, for a nice drive up 395, this time tomorrow night I'll be snug in my sleeping bag in my favorite spot in French Camp, I'm sure other than the host I'll be the only one there. Will fish the open section of the Owens and shoot a few hundred rounds.

Nice photo Creek Dude.  One good windy day and the lake will be just about ice free!

It looks like this years thaw is 1-2 weeks ahead of last year.
Lots of open water, great weather forecast and lots of fish being stocked = what should be a great time.
Here's to " Fish On ". For all those going up.
Look forward to all your reports.
gone fishn, hope to be catchn soon !

Yeah, Sue King took that pic...wish I were there.  Ever thought lakes at 9,700 feet would be free of ice in April?  Nuts...

WOW...I wonder when the last time was that this has happened...I remember back in the 3rd week of June 1995,  it was still mostly frozen,  and there was solid snow above East Fork all the way up the hill...
Once I arrive at Tom's Place...well,  you know...nothing else matters...

Amazing!  First time I ever heard of a ice free Rock Creek lake for the opener.
