Website Issues?
« on: April 29, 2013, 10:12:48 AM »
I have been unable to access the Rockcreeklake.com site via AOL and Internet Explorer for the past week.  Were there some changes to the server?  The only way I can access the site is via my computer at work, which uses Windows Internet Explorer so can't figure this out. Both AOL and IE give me an error message for an invalid website, so can't figure out the problem.  Looks like some have been posting to the Board and have not had any issues.  My email @rockcreeklake.com is not working either so perhaps there is an issue somewhere.
The creek is waiting...

I had the same problem over the weekend!  I use Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer too, and could not get in either.  OK now but could be a problem later!  Hopefully Creek Dude can check this out.

I have had the same  problem and am able to re boot my computor and get on. I use Internet Explorer. It seams to be a random problem with no consistency.

Frustrating, isn't it?  RNCGirl, it's been sporadic for me for the past week, too, no matter what I tried.  I am sure Tim is looking into it and will tune it up for us.  Meantime, I am downloading every pertinent photo and thread onto my flash drive...just in case the worst happens.

Anyone still having issues?  Here's the message I got from the dude that's hosting it for us...

"Last week the hosting company made some changes to the DNS for all of the sites moving the DNS server that hosts ns1.visitmymedia.com. There is a chance your ISP hasn't updated its DNS records yet for rockcreeklake.com. I use OpenDNS and it is resolving to the site. I also was able to access the site from work.

The update took place Friday, so the changes should have been distributed to the ISPs of the world.  You might check with your ISP to see if it can update its records."

He also sent me this...

Try this:

How to clear your DNS cache

The following methods allow you to remove old and inaccurate DNS information that may result in 404 errors.

Windows® XP, 2000, or Vista®

    Click the Start button.
On the Start menu, click Run....
If you do not see the Run command in Vista, enter "run" in the Search bar.
Type the following in the Run text box: ipconfig /flushdns

--------

Hope this helps.  I've been pretty frustrated too...

I see the site's having far fewer issues, but it's still "coming and going" at times.  I'm really sorry for the inconvenience.  The problems are on the server end, so hopefully it all gets cleared up soon.

First off, I'd like to acknowledge your frustrations with the website and the recent DNS issues. I am the host of the site and I maintain the backend of the server to ensure it can serve up all of this good stuff.

Occasionally, machines fail; this happened recently to the DNS server for our website. All web addresses have an IP number assigned to them, which is then translated into the web address. In this case, the IP address was changed for the host. Usually when this happens all of the ISPs in the world, ie AOL, ATT, Centurylink, Verison, et. al., receive a registry update and they automatically redirect the website to the correct IP number.

Often, ISPs fail to refresh their registries daily, especially for websites not as popular as say Google.com/news. (I know, this is an extremely popular website - just not as popular as Google <G>).

When that happens, you have to take control of the situation and flush you DNS cache. This is the registry on your own computer. By "flushing the cache," you force the ISP to redirect you to the proper IP address because it has to go out and find it.

Here are instructions for Windows and Mac: http://www.wikihow.com/Flush-DNS

I hope that helps explain the situation and allow you to make some positive changes that will help you access this website. BTW, after we updated the DNS, everything loads a lot faster.

Drop me a line if you have any questions.

Tight Lines!

Michael

Ok. So I was able to make 2 posts then back to the error message. Which states I don't have permission and also 404 error. Sorry I don't have it to look at right now. I am away from the house and this is from my IPhone. After receiving the error message I couldn't access the site from the computer or my phone.
