Rock Creek Road is open to Mosquito Flat - NOT!!
« on: April 16, 2012, 08:01:25 PM »
According to the Rock Creek Campgrounds Facebook page, the road is open all the way to the trailhead at Mosquito Flat.  I really find that hard to believe, but they were emphatic...CRAZY to have the road open all the way this early!

Earliest I ever heard it open!  Must be a record or something.

I tried to drive up there today so I could give first hand information, only got as far as East Fork, they have the gate locked there. All I can tell you is there's not a whole lot of snow at E.F.. I was hoping to give a better report, but you'll just have to wait, I'll keep checking.
As far as why Mammoth may have gotten snow, and Rock Creek didn't...that's why Dave McCoy built his resort where he did, lots of watching on his part 70 years ago. Also why I live in Hilton, we don't get near the snow amounts that Mammoth does.

Oh yeah...I agree...the forest service has NEVER gotten the road open this early...maybe in 76-77..but that's it.  I should've been more facetious in my post probably...I pretty much knew there was no way the road was open, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

I bet it's open by Memorial Weekend though...I'd bet the house on it...

When I worked at the Resort in the 80's, we were under the impression that neither the USFS or the County would  try to plow the road from the Pack Station to Mosquito Flat. They told us the road was too narrow, and the road bed too thin to run a plow over it. They'd just wait til it melted out. Not sure if this still holds true or not...we may just have to wait for Mother Nature to take care of it.

Just got back from another drive up the hill, here's the latest. The road is closed at the Pack Station (gate closed). You can drive to the boat docks, but the gate on the  road to the top of the Lake is still locked. There's open water at the inlet, outlet, a little by the Group Camp, a little in Rainbow Bay, the rest is covered with ice, no idea how thick.
Not much snow anywhere until you get about half way between East Fork and the Lodge, patchy above that. Nothing was open except French, I didn't drive down to Tuff, but the Host has been there a while.
Everybody have a good Opener.
