Rock Creek 2012
« on: April 27, 2012, 12:38:23 PM »
Our ground squirrel crew is starting this weekend. Several months back 'home' in the canyon. Wondering how many of the little guys survived without much snow to insulate their hibernacula.

Normally we'd be sending updates of campground openings and road conditions, but thanks to Scout and Facebook, we don't need to!

Meanwhile, happy Fishmas to all!!

I hope they did well and survived. They are a major source of my campsite entertainment.  ;D

Are you going to be in the canyon with the crew this year?

Yep - but not until next month. Student will stay later too - it's her last field season, so she needs to fit in a lot! Can't wait to be back in mountains again...

This is more about getting to Rock Creek.

Construction on 395 along Topaz Lake. One lane only, so 'expect delays up to 20 minutes.' Seriously torn up road. Wouldn't want to drive it at night.

Lee Vining gas: $5.09.

Back in the mountains: priceless!!

I looked at that Crowley Lake webcam today and saw 3 bugs (mosquitoes ?) on it.  Any feedback on how bad they are right now?

No mosquitoes today at Horse Corral near Upper Pine Grove. So little standing water for this time of year.

Nice being back!

Update - first mosquito today! Not too bad, but then we're not standing in water.

Anyone who is a fan of Upper Pine Grove Site #8, bad news. Most of the trees around it were chopped down. Don't know why.

Forgot to mention we saw a bald eagle over Crowley Lake yesterday. That never gets old....

It's always cool to see a bald eagle. I watched one dive down and snatch a trout out of Intake II last weekend. It was up and out of sight before I could get my camera out.

Thats sad about #8 at  Upper Pine Grove although its sites are tough to get the surrondings are worth the effort. any other damage to that campground area. I'll bet the meadow will be really dry by late July. What about all the trees around the two campgrounds Upper and Lower.

Were the trees diseased or was it weather related?

Don't know. They were cut down. Big ones, too. Not seeing other trees down due to storms (haven't been to Pine Grove yet). Will ask if anyone is around.

I'll bet the trees had butt rot.  You don't want butt rot...

It's going to seem strange to have NO SNOW Memorial Day...  Plan on being there Wednesday afternoon unless the traffic over Tioga Pass is full of sightseeing buses or a bunch of 20 mph trailers.

I can remember (circa 1952) Memorial Day having more snow at Windy Point on the road than we could get through so that we were glad we had chains and forced our way over the rise where the road now is and had to do some digging with shovels in real deep areas.   Nobody in the campground since there was so much snow and we got bogged down with the rear wheels sunk into the snow and mud against the hill at the back of the campground and left the 39 Chevy Suburban with 4 speed transmission there while we carried all our things on the snowed in road up the hill to our cabin.   We spent a couple of hours digging ourselves out several days later so we could pack and drive home.

Obviously several years later the the road around Windy Point was abandoned and gated as a walking path and they built the new road exactly where we had forced our way through the snow to get to the campground area.

Of course they also pretty well changed forever the nice old Rock Creek with a super highway paved up from Tom's Place!!!

Well,  if you look at the forecast,  you just might get snow this weekend...
Once I arrive at Tom's Place...well,  you know...nothing else matters...

Forgot to mention the calliope hummingbirds are back!

Stopped by Pine Grove CG today. Host was there, but was on the phone so I couldn't ask about UPG #8's trees. PG CG looked the same as in past years.
