Boy, people are itching for Big and Iris Meadows to open, judging by the vehicles. There was even a tour bus at Iris today, albeit a small one.

Further up it's been REALLY quiet. I like it. Think that might be over this weekend!

Bald eagle swooped down over the meadow today, not more than 10' off the ground. Then circled the upper ridge for 20 minutes or so. Awesome.

Figured Iris, Big, and Pine Groves would open this weekend. Well, maybe not Upper Pine...

The White Mountains were simply spectacular this morning. They had been naked, but today blanketed to the floor with snow. Of course, most of that is gone now, but it was gorgeous!

First time I ever saw ice on the feeder streams  - with the water so low at this point, it could form. Brrr.

Upper Pine Grove is open, but Pine Grove and Iris are not. Stopped by PG and asked about site #8 at UPG. She said they must have been dangerous trees, as the Forest Service only removes them for that reason. Said PG will hopefully open on Tuesday. Plumbing problems. (She used to be host at McGee.)

Don't know why Iris is still closed.

Oh, all the cars heading up the hill as we left, yikes!

Looks like Lower Pine Grove is still closed. Half of the Iris gate was open today.

Mosquitoes are definitely ramping up. Ugh.

Hit Pie in the Sky.  :pie2:

Lower Pine Grove CG is now open. Iris is not. :(

Saw a bald eagle swoop over the meadow again today. Ran to get the camera, but could only get mostly blurry shots as it circled over head for about five minutes.  Three sightings in two weeks. Beginning to think there's a nest somewhere in the canyon!

Jill,
That's great news of the sightings. Nice to see a national treasure flourishing in our "backyard".
Also the pie sightings!  Things are ramping up!  :pie2:

Hmmm. This was just posted on the RC CG facebook page:
"Of course our resident Bald Eagles & Osprey are still fishing the lakes daily. I got to see 1 come down and scoop a trout out of the lake yesterday."

I see osprey regularly over the meadow, but not BAEA. Certainly not this often. Glad I don't have to head to the lake to see them, then!

(Tex - agreed!)

Surveyors have been working on Rock Creek Lake Road for the last four days or so. Including Sat. and Sun. - tax dollars at work! Suppose that means construction will be starting soon. :(

Iris is still closed. Upper Pine Grove was full several mornings this past week. Creek was hopping today - lots and lots of people fishing and hiking.

Been seeing a couple of different bald eagles working the lake in the last couple months.
last summer I was out doing the bubble fly thing in the evening.
the fish were going nuts breaking and jumping all around me a huge really old bald eagle
Comes flying over the lake. Immediately all surface activity ended. The eagle landed in a tree near the inlet where he remained for about 10 minutes. Not a single fish rose
The entire time he was in the tree. The eagle finally flew off and within 30 seconds the fish were back in full feeding mode. Amazing to witness. :fishing3:

Company is still surveying the road.

Upper Pine Grove was full today when we left. (Iris is still closed.)

Went to PITSC for pie around 12:30 for pie. Flavors were being crossed off as we waited. By the time we tried to order, were told to wait 15 minutes, since prior orders were catching up and they didn't know what would be available.

Had a new visitor to the meadow last couple of days. Would think it would be interested in all the juveniles now cluttering the field. Kestrel looked around a lot, but didn't go for any. Really ticked off the blackbirds and robins.

Nice shots of the Kestrel.

We will be at French Camp for a quick trip from 5-8 July.
Will break-in my new camera up at the Creek.

Cool pics, Jill.  Glad to hear none of your studies were air lifted out of there.
Let me wake laughing from a nap in the afternoon under the aspens in the fall.

Great pictures Jill.

Saudust, that airlift would have been first class with a window seat on both sides.

Outstanding shots Jill, I really like that 2nd and 3rd pic.
Life without music, laughter, and an Eastern Slope BBQ would be a mistake.

Oy. Kestrel was back, making passes through the meadow. Squirrels were wigged out, so not a good data day. It flew by with something at one point, but I think it was a vole.

The squirrels were chirping most of the morning. Even a robin flying low freaked them out.

One of our poor guys who barely escaped from a pine marten last week was stalked by this guy, until it took off. A 'dark morph' red tail hawk, I think.

Awsome pics you all,  Its good to see the Baldy have started to return to the canyon.  I can't wait till I make it up there again soon.  Thinking of a Father Daughter weekend trip.

Last hike of my season was in the canyon, of course! Decided to do a new one, so we headed for Francis Lake. Never did the trail to Tamarack/Dorothy/Kenneth/Francis from RCL before.
 :hiking2:
View of RCL during our 1200' ascent.

Took the bike trail part way to find some water for the dog (getting hard to find water already this season!). Saw several of these 'platforms' by the creek. Anyone know what they were for?

Amazing riparian area just before Francis. Nice little lake. Couple of views:

Should have been an eight mile hike, but SOMEBODY (hint below) decided to take off on us when we headed back down. He went for another swim/drink at Kenneth, and disappeared. We looked and called for him for 45 minutes there, and then spread out. Turns out he went BACK to Francis Lake. Darn dog probably did 20 miles that day (we did 10). And he paid for it, big time, the next week!

Sigh, now back in Chicago, where it's supposed to be 100 tomorrow.  :(

Thanks, Jill, and sorry to hear about your returning to Chicago, especially after staying in RC.  I learned a new word, too, teacher, "riparian".

Safe travels.
