There was a huge tug on the end of his pole. So strong it took the raft in tow.

The line was humming, so hard was the pull, a v wake formed where it met the depths. The boy held on with all his might but logs of the raft were slick and his feet began to slip.

He landed hard on the logs of the raft as he fought that huge trout for allís heís worth!  That fall took the air out of him and being a little lad, he became sleepy and falls asleep on the raft as the large trout pulls him downstream.

When he awoke he was near the shore in a quiet place with deep water and it was beautiful with thick forest in the background and the sound of the inlet cascading into the lake. He grabbed his pole and the fish came gently to the surface. As he went down on his knees at the edge of the raft he and the fish locked eyes and

as he gazed into the limpid pools of black, he remembered the nights round the camp fire when the old folks would tell tales of the monster fish that no one could catch.

The fish that was reportedly "as long as yer laig" and "big as a barrel"...

Was this the fish of legend...yes...

it was him...it was

Ole Hank. Right then the big fish began to quiver and jerk. Ole Hank's brownish color glistened in the eyes of the boy. The boy thought how tasty the big fish would be. Hank's mouth began to move ...was he going to speak?----->

No, he starts licking the boy.  But fish donít lick do they?  He wakes up to find his dog licking his face.  He looks at his home made pole and seeís that his line has snapped and his bait is gone.  Was this just a dream?  He ties a fresh line and hook and adds a fresh worm that he dug up this morning in the meadow.  With his dog by his side, pushes off from shore to hopefully catch a big one.  Then suddenly..............

there's a commotion in the trees on the shore, and he turns to look at a large black bear that saunters down to the water.  The bear is licking his chops and reminds the boy of the dream he just woke from. He knows he should be scared , but the bear looks well.... kind of friendly  so he begins to row a little closer.

Still somewhat doubtful, but letting his curiosity get the better of him, he edges closer to the bank when suddenly his trusted companion launches into the water with the apparent intention of warding off the bear and protecting his master.  The boys eyes widened to the size of saucers and as he called to his dog to come back, he...

As his raft breached the grassy bank the boy jumped onto shore whistling and calling his faithful four-legged companion's name. He was frantic to find his friend and ran fast towards the last place he saw him. He stumbled on something and fell hurting his ankle. Wait....what was that sound?....a rustling of bushes behind him getting closer, closer, closer...until......
