where am i? apps for phones

spotted this on desert USA....    i love the idea of downloading maps before you go that work when you are out of cell service range!

not only for when one may be lost,,, but i am thinking it would help out in making decisions on wether to continue on or turn back,,,  just how far away is that next lake anyway?

Great info LHR. I just downloaded a few of the free apps on my android, including the Red Cross First Aid app. Thanks.

Pretty cool, being gadget addicted I'll have to add that to my inventory. I currently use a gps and a Findme Spot satellite gadget which has a bluetooth connection to the iphone. It can send short text messages from remote areas and has the SOS feature for the nearest search and rescue unit. The only problem with these things is you need a satellite signal and sometimes in big tree areas they don't work.

I used topo for Iphone app last yr....Has my vote! Works well.
