I am not that great at math, but I believe 4 and 4 is 8. So in reality the four hour closure is really an eight hour closure. Basically the whole day.

Worst part, that week is one of the heaviest vacation weeks during the summer as people tie it in with the 4th holiday. Way to use your brains people.
Pack it in, Pack it out...or have a Wrangler do it for you.

I still say nothing was wrong with the road in the first place. I never had any problems going up or downhill...

Wow, that is insane to close the road down for 8 hours. Even for just one day, let alone four days.
Life without music, laughter, and an Eastern Slope BBQ would be a mistake.

6/10/15 Construction update from USFS:
PAVING
Starting June 15th there will be NO PARKING ALLOWED  THE LAST 6 MILES while they pave the road. They are starting June 15th on the second lift of the top three miles. Then they will pave the middle three miles. Paving will occur every day except Sunday June 21st and will be completed by Friday June 19th. This means the 30 minute delays will occur during Friday and Sat June 19th and 20th and Friday June 26th.

PULVERIZING
Starting June 22nd there will be no parking on the lower 3 miles while they pulverize.

BRIDGE SLAB WORK AND 4 HOUR DELAYS
Several people expressed concerns with the two - 4 hour delays scheduled for the week after July 4th.  The FHWA, the contractors and their sub-contractors have had several discussions regarding rescheduling of this work or performing night work.  The sub-contractors whom will be doing this week will not be available again until the end of the season. This will jeopardize meeting  the Sept completion date and would most likely extend  work until next year’s construction season.  There are safety concerns for completing this work at night.  We apologize for the inconvenience to your operation. We do not want this project to extend into next season. Based on this information Mono County and the Forest Service feel that the least disruptive option is the proposed schedule that was sent on June 2,2015:
Monday July 6th Mobilize to the site
Tuesday July 7th  8:00 AM to 12:00 PM (4 hour closure) and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM (4 hour closure)
Wednesday July 8th  8:00 AM to 12:00 PM (4 hour closure) and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM (4 hour closure)
Thursday July 9th  8:00 AM to 12:00 PM (4 hour closure) and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM (4 hour closure)
Friday July 10th  8:00 AM to 12:00 PM (4 hour closure) and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM (4 hour closure) {Only if needed}

EQUIPMENT MOBILIZATION
The contractor will be mobilizing equipment to the job site this weekend. There may be very short delays with flaggers as the transport vehicle gets into position to off load equipment.

SURVEYORS
Surveyors will also be working weekends the next few weeks but will not be stopping traffic.

That sounds reasonable.  If you need to go up or down you know it's between 12 and 1 p.m. on those days so plan your arrival or trips in and out of the area accordingly.  Make sure you are well stocked with supplies.  Yes a huge inconvenience to those that decide to venture to the area this year, but they (FHWA and the other powers that be) are at least doing some forward thinking about trying to get this project done this year.  Me?  I will be avoiding the area this year, so I will be unaffected by it.  I planned vacation back in January exclusively for going up there this month, but have made the decision to stay away until later in the year or next year.

I wonder how many other camprgrounds are above 7,000 feet in the area...hmmmmm....

Just an update, the Mono County Board of Supervisors approved the above dates for the road construction yesterday at their Board meeting...so the road will be closed July 7 - 10, 2015 from 8a-12p and 1-5p. Work may be completed by the 9th so the road may be back open on the 10th.

The already paved road from East Fork on up has now been re-paved. Today they started paving down from Easy Fork past Big Meadow/Iris, one lane. Progress!

So does that mean the Friday road closure(if necessary), is now in fact necessary?

Inquiring minds want to know.

All I know is that we noticed no differences in the bridges from 7 am to 12:30 pm. Not sure what was done during the first 4-hour closure except moving one big piece of equipment (the staging was supposed to happen yesterday). As always, will let you know what USFS tells me!

From USFS: No more 4-hour delays. Apparently this afternoon's was cancelled, too.

More from Mono Co: The bridge work on Rock Creek Road was completed this morning.  Unfortunately, the lightning moved in and prevented the contractor from safely breaking down the crane and reopening the road at 12:00 as scheduled.  However, as of 2:00 the road was back open and traffic is restored.  The contractor will resume 30 minute maximum construction delays until the project is complete.

(Completion date is as late as end of September.)

Construction update from USFS, July 29:
Next week paving starts on the lower 3 miles including all of the  bridge approaches.  The contractor will commence August 5th. They will be working from 6 am until 6:30 PM.  They will be working on Saturday the 8th and 15th  as well. They hope to complete paving by Saturday the 15th. If they do not they will continue the week of Monday the 17th but the schedule will be 7 am to 6:30 PM.

Re: completion date of the project. They have until mid-October to complete the project.  It appears they are running 2-3 weeks behind their original schedule so they may not complete the project until October.

I've been tracking the information given on this thread all summer and have a question. During this final paving project will the delays start at 6am and last till 6pm, and I'm guessing that above the paving work the road will flow under normal conditions. We are coming up on 8/14 for 5 days and would be starting up from Toms Place around 7am should we arrive before 6am to avoid delays? Just dont want to sit in traffic after a  5 hour drive.

Thanks for any info.

Update from USFS:
There have been issues with the asphalt plant so paving is behind schedule.

The contractor will be working Saturday August 15th on paving, so traffic delays will be in place.

They hope to complete the main road by the end of Sat and will have to work on pullouts and aprons next week.

They will also start working on raising manholes to grade, shoulder work, paved ditches, catch basins, signs and snow poles.
