Any new info on road construction?
« on: July 21, 2014, 09:51:59 AM »
The wife, Jasper  :doglick:, and I are headed up the last week of August. Since we fish the river a lot and spend a lot of time at Walker Lake we are camping at French camp. Is there any new info on the road construction at RCL road? We do travel this most every day (mostly for pie)  :pie2:. Kinda would like to know what to expect.

Anyone in the neighborhood between August 28th - Sept. 1st stop to say hi (site 34, French). We will arrive the night of the 26th kinda late leaving late Sept. 1st. Taste buds already going crazy for PIE!

From what I've heard, the construction is starting from the top of the road and working down. Even if you did experience delays, it sounds like they'd be slight, not like a complete closure or anything like that. My Sister and I will be there the same week as you, camping at Big Meadow on our traditional annual trip. maybe I 'll stop by and scratch Jasper behind the ears.

Thanks for the info Big Steve. Jasper will never turn down a scratch behind the ears. We really didn't want to be there on a Holiday week, but it was the only time slot we had this year. We normally hike away from people anyway. McLeod, Walker, Parker, Virginia, and Little Lakes Valley (LLV) are our usual hiking spots. We also like to fish the Owens and the Gorge/Power plant area, so we try to stay in the lower campgrounds.

during club, which was eons ago now,,,  the road had been pulverized into gravel size pieces and re-spread across the road bed above the pack station.  it was quite drivable....   the part of the road where it narrows down before mosquito flats was left untouched.. i dont think they will be doing anything to that part of the road.

below the pack station, they have been working on re-surveying, and removing stones/boulders from the edges of the road.... preparing for the widening..... but the road itself was not touched.

they had placed those large concrete center divide things on one edge of each creek crossing on the way up... significantly narrowing the road at each creek crossing....

i have no clue how far they have made it down the road now tho, it may still be the same.

they have a bunch of equipment parked in the big area near palisades, with chain link fencing around it.   then some scattered vehicles along the road.   the big tree up higher is fenced off with that orange plastic construction fencing.
Hardrock, may his spirit live on in all of us.....

Little hard rock! That is a very very good report on road repairs. I dont know why i cant word it the way you do and make better sense with my posts! Your doing a great job. BUT, i dont think the club meet is eons ago! I still stayed a whole week after and appreciated you droping off my lantern cover for me at my camp the next day. I must report that the bear that was at your camp appreared at BIG MEADOW two days later! How awesome is that. It was to dark though to take pics. But I must report that there were no incidents with the bear. He just came through camp at about 0400 and just checked everthing and WANDERED through! I am still cherishing CLUB 2014 ! I am already waiting for the next one! Im already planning on what to make! Getting back to the road repairs. I still hope they repair the road that leads to the trail head. But over all the road wait with the truck escort was not as bad an i thought it would be. i have only been back a week and i soooooooo missssss the creek!

We really didn't want to be there on a Holiday week, but it was the only time slot we had this year.

We've been going the last week of August for several years now and there haven't been any crowds, I think a lot of people either have kids starting school or getting ready to start. Last year Big Meadow only had about 6 campsites occupied while we were there.

Good news about the crowds. We usually attempt to stay clear of the most populated areas...unless of course we are after pie.

Just got back and the road has removed from the store down to just past the lodge turn off. The have a pilot truck that ushers the cars in and out so you will have a wait of maybe 5 - 10 minutes unless you hit it just right.

It was a clusterf%$&* at the store during pie (11:00 AM - Noon) with little room to park and get out. Even though I was just turning up the hill to go back to the lake I had to weight about 5 minutes. I wasn't even getting pie! Just wanted ice and didn't check the time. If you are not wanting pie, stay away from 10:30 to noon.
