Quick day trip to McGee and Rock Creek
« on: May 13, 2012, 12:45:01 PM »
Took a quick trip yesterday to check out the creeks with Salim.  After getting a sandwich at Schatts,  we stopped at this lil flyshop on the way out of town.  Trace was really cool,  he did not have any egg patterns but tied some up right away,  very cool guy.  Check out Sierra trout magnet flyshop next time ur in town...
We got up to Mcgee and fished downstream for a ways below 395.  We caught several fish in the 12-17 inch range,  but it seemed like most of the fish had spawned and returned down to Crowley

Of course,  it would have been a sin to be so close to Rock Creek and not head up there!  Slow action on the flies,   but I did catch a future meal on spinners in the snow park area.  Great trip,  looonnnnnggggg day but worth it!

Once I arrive at Tom's Place...well,  you know...nothing else matters...

That's a lot of driving for one day, but you made the most out of it.  Special Regs area right?  Thanks for sharing.

That's a drive for sure, but you got to scratch the inch.  Feels good to wet the line and feel the tug on your pole.

Looks like a great day even with the drive. I had some friends call and ask me to do a day trip to Bishop Friday. I said I'd go but how about we stay the night and come back Saturday instead. Fished Wier Pond and Bishop Creek on Friday, fished the creek and float tubed Intake II on Saturday. Wier Pond and Intake II were both slow for us but the fish were stacked up in the creek.

I heard that Weir Pond was very shallow this year.

We fished as long as we drove, it was worth it and it was a great day.
There were a great many fish that were in pairs.
Terry landed the 17inch trout and shortly after that I landed its partner.  the colors on the fish were great.
Other fisherman were very helpfull.
the best thing we did see was a large trout about 14-16in jumping out of the water 6-12 inches high three
times in a row.  Turns out there was a water snake coming to shore and the trout wanted out of its way.

Like Terry said, it was great to be fish rockcreek.

We had great snacks from Schats and a good pizza from the pizza factory.

Terry will post a couple more fish pictures later on.

I did read your post Terry and I am listening to you and Art.

Can swap my car for a minivan for the week-end and take four other people (moi, TT plus 4).

so when are we going, and who is going?

ps: the drive up and back is about friendship and fishing stories - make the trip go faster.
I usually drive to Montana in without stopping (18-22hours depending on time of the year and weather),
so this past trip was a practive drive for my July or August vacation.

Thanks for the report Topwater. I'm heading up this weekend and will spend 7 days there. Had to push my trip up or I wouldn't be able to make it at all. It sounds like I won't get any pie though. I read there won't be any pie until the 25th which is the day I leave. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a piece for the ride home.  :pie2:
