Campgrounds
« on: January 23, 2015, 08:09:22 AM »
Good morning,

Our group is trying to plan a trip in mid May and our curious if any of the campgrounds will be up and running at that time.  We are looking at Thursday May 14th and leaving on Monday the 18th.  Everything in Mammoth is closed until Memorial or later.  Looks like East fork opens on the 15th of May.  We really like Big Meadow, and never tried Iris, don't want to be as low and French.  Any input would be most appreciated. Praying for rain!!!!

Cheers,
Acquaman

opening dates are weather dependent... but most campgrounds will try to be open for opening day fisherman....  they may not take reservations prior to may,, but they may still be open.    you just have to keep on checking.

Thanks LH for the input.  Do we just check here on this forum or is there somewhere on line that gives up to date info on what is open?  Seems like East Fork is the only place on Reserve America that give specific dates.  Thanks again.

This forum has nothing to do with campground opening dates or making reservations....

' rock creek canyon campgrounds' page on facebook usually announces when the campgrounds will be opening...     so that is a good resource to use.

the dates on east fork may be the reservation dates only,, and have nothing to do with when the campground actually opens....  if it opens before may 15, then the sites are first come first serve.

checking back to this board is good too, cause we tend to post when we hear they are opening.

There are several campgrounds in the canyon that are first come first serve,  so that is prolly why you don't see anything about them on reserveusa.  As long as you are not looking for an actual group campground,  you will probably find something in mid may,  unless Noah unleashes something here in a hurry...

Thanks for the tips.  I will check the page on Facebook and just wait to see what is posted on this site.  You all always seems to have the most accurate and up to date info anyways.  Now let it snow..............

"Discuss anything related to the Eastern Sierra on this board", didn't see a more appropriate place for your thread.

French Camp will be open by mid-May; There's a good chance the Meadows will be open as well, and maybe even East Fork, considering the lack of snow.  It'll be a question of whether or not enough staff is in place and the fixes from the winter are minimal so campgrounds can open.  French Camp is a guarantee though...it will be open.

French Camp has been open for the opener for the last 25 plus years as I am always the first one in the campground 3 days before the opener...

Oh, and you won't need reservations...just roll on in...unless there's a specific site you like in French Camp.  Otherwise, I'd just see what's open and grab one.
