Thar She Blows- Part 2
« on: February 27, 2015, 02:22:57 PM »
The whale trip to the Baja Lagoons was awesome. There is no way to describe the emotion when one of those big hummers comes up and bumps your boat and blows spray all over you. Unbelievable!
The trip was 1200 miles round trip, 6 days, 5 nights. Spent about 8 hours over 2 days on Scammons Lagoon and 2 hours 1 day on San Ignacio Lagoon. These are grey whales with the bigger females about 45 ft long and up to 25 tons. Touching or petting the babies is probably the highlight. Some of the ladies leaned out of the boats and kissed them- that was not my goal!

A few pics follow:

Cardon cactus, up to 30' tall and 10 tons

One of the group had a Go Pro mounted on a 30"rod and got some incredible under water video. When I get a copy, I'll see if I can get a Youtube link.

Talk about gentle giants!  Thanks, BJ.  What a cool thing to do and experience.

Wow, what great shots!    Love the landscape shots with the cactus and cirrillo trees.

I remember driving in to San Ignacio 30 years ago on a surf trip, it was a cool little village with a traditional town square and beautiful palms with the lagoon.  One of my favorite memories.

It hasn't changed much. Some of the rough road to the lagoon has been improved.
