2015 Sierra Nevada Pictures

Thought I’d start another Eastern Sierra Picture thread.  I have a ton of pictures to share and hoping others will share their Sierra pictures as well.  Let’s continue this for 2015 and share your pictures of anything “Sierra”.  All Sierra Nevada photos are welcome, old and new.

Real close Tex!  About a mile north from the Gardisky Lake Trailhead, looking straight at the White Mountains, Maul Lake, etc.

You’re very observant Saudust!  Love it when somebody asks about anything historical in my photos!  Some history on this cabin:  It was built in the early 1900’s and was used as a trapper cabin for the area and a little later as a miner’s cabin.  “Back in the day” the snow would get over 20 feet deep here and made this cabin an excellent place to warm up and rest.

In 1964 when the “Wilderness Act of 1964” passed, this cabin became the property of the US Forest Service.  Today this cabin is used as a forest service wilderness ranger headquarters.  They added the chimney stack as you observed Saudust, but the rest of cabin is original.  It’s about a 2 ½ mile hike to this cabin from the closest trailhead. :hiking2:

I know you know the mines in the area.  Maybe the Bennettville Mine is nearby to this old miner's cabin?  Fascinating things to research.  Now I've seen Maul Lake, Trebel and Green Lakes, Bennettville and it's old mining cabins, so much history to delve into.

This particular cabin was built tough with logs that were squared off with wooden dowels and plugs.  Not a single nail was observed on this cabin!  Nails were hand forged and very expensive back then and most people built using as few as possible, if any.  They notch the wood so it fits together nice and tight and then seal between each log.  Some serious craftsman work done here!

The cabins and buildings at Bennettville did use “square” nails for their construction.  But that mining operation had good financing backing.

It does have the look of Upper Gaylor Lake.  But head up north about 3-4 miles and you come up to Saddlebag Lake.  Got up early on a chilly morning to get this shot before the winds picked up.

Hawk, I hope to be so fruitful the mid part of May of 2015 as you have as I descend on the Sierra for the first time for 2015. No dis-respect..... You DA mang.  YES I owe tr's here; lest I forget. I forget not my humble inspirations from you! T-H-A-N-K you. :wood: I'd chop your chords till 20xxx. IF you would stay below -10,000k. You have steered me and advised me; and have prospered. Even though I lived in SoCal since birth till 1991 and fished the Sierra since 1974. Your enhancements have skyrocketed my fishing. I'm a bp'er with a fishing HABIT. Oh yeah.... :pie2:

Does this dirt road look familiar?  Near the 10,000 foot level and good fishing.
