Dismal snow pack
« on: March 14, 2015, 09:44:56 AM »
I know this is no surprise to you who live there, but living on the East coast, this chart from easternsierraforcast.com was jaw dropping to me.
The question is, will this make for great fishing by concentrating the available fish in ever smaller bodies of water, or will the effects of low water conditions wreak havoc on the already stressed fish stocks?

It is bad news for fish and fisherman.

In some places we can expect algal blooms which result in a variety of problems including changes in oxygen concentrations an fish die-offs.

Let's hope that does not happen.

For drive-to lakes, streams and rivers, 2015 could be a dismal year.  DFG already stated that stocking will be down another 40% this year, and the continuing drought will keep the reservoirs at minimum levels again this year.

When I was at Bishop Creek Canyon last summer, they we not stocking South Lake and Lake Sabrina due to very low lake levels.  I expect it to be the same this year.

On a positive note, back-country lakes are mostly full and the bite has been incredible the last three summers.  Thatís where Iíll be fishing this coming season! :fishing3:

Pretty scary to see and think about. It's also one of the reasons I have a reservation for next Friday in Yosemite Valley. I'm guessing that the run off is about as good as it's going to get and it's the end of the off season discounts.

Thanks, Tim.  As they say, a picture's worth a thousand words.  In this case, one word...DRY.
