South Bay Science Fair!

 

Welcome to South Bay’s Science Fair page!  Our entire school will be taking part in the Science Fair this year.  The goal of science fair is to familiarize students with the process of doing science.  The process is commonly called the Scientific Method.

 

Students will be given time in class to work on these projects; however some additional time at home may be needed.  We will be holding our school science fair in February, and those chosen to go on to the Humboldt County Science Fair will be judged in March. 

 

The 4th and 5th graders have some choices in the type of project they may choose. They can make 3-D models, collections based on research, models demonstrating a scientific principle or technology, observations of the environment, data collection projects or conduct an experiment.  The 6th graders are encouraged to conduct experiments or observational studies, and will be given higher marks for work in these areas.

 

Students should have a topic they’re interested in and turned in to Mrs. Grimmett or their classroom teacher by the week of October 17th. 

 

     Steps to follow to guide you in the process:

                                             

  1. Discover a topic that makes you wonder (Origin of Idea).  Remember this is the first step in your log book.  
  2. Generate a (Question) that is inspired by your (Idea).
  3. Do (Background Research) on your (Question).
  4. Form a (Hypothesis), an educated guess, to answer your (Question).
  5. List all of the (Materials) needed for your project.
  6. Write your (Procedure) or steps you will take to conduct your experiment.
  7. (Display) data, charts, photos or models that you made or gathered.  
  8. (Analyze Results) discovered from observation.
  9. Write your (Conclusion) of what you have learned or observed.
