The John Muir Wilderness is the largest Wilderness area in California.  This trail is NOT a part of the John Muir Trail, however.  Mono Pass leads hikers to the JMT on the Sierra's west side near Lake Thomas Edison.  The short, steep ascent of Crankcase Grade is next.
